Weller WESD51 no power

Years ago, a friend asked me to look at his WESD51 because it would not power on. I wrote it off as the iron being bad because it smelled kinda burnt. No, I didn't check power at the secondaries. Move forward to a few years later, I'm dismantling the unit and notice a component I've never seen, and wonder if it could be the problem. If it's an easy fix, I'll fix it and either sell it or use it.

what are you refering too, the glass tube?
thats a reed switch - a magnet controlled switch

Yes, I have never seen one. If it looks normal, then I'll test the secondaries to be absolutely sure and report back.

you can test it - hold a meter across it reading continuity and then put a magnet near it to switch it on.
