110 Volt Line Conditioner ( 12 volt regulator cap failure repair once before)

About 5 years ( or ) more ago I had recap this line conditioner because it would rapidly relay clicking so that was the reason for having to recap the board

The other thing it was doing every time the air conditioner would turn ON it would click this started about 2 weeks ago

We have a lot of voltage dipping where I live ( 110 to 126 volts ac ) so I was not surprised that it was doing this but I have two more of units that were not doing this all time but i I did not give it much thought but maybe I should have but it is a pain in the butt to work on this unit

Now today it did the same exact thing again so this same cap is bad again

So I put a new cap in again and it stopped it again from relay chattering

As you can see in the picture the of the cap that I had used before ( PW )
The new cap ESR reading was 0.06 about twice the amount of a new cap ( LXV ) automotive grade capacitor

It also has another capacitor on this board but it was not bad 220uf@50 volts ( KZE )

One note about this line conditioner it about 25 years old now

solder wires across the cap and see what voltage it see's
maybe there is a failing zener diode or drop-transistor causing overvoltage

This voltage is coming from the transformer secondary step down windings then it goes to 4 diodes then the capacitor and then goes to the voltage regulator which supply power to the two ic chips ( I will keep this in mind what you have pointed out thanks )

The capacitor is on the input side of the voltage regulator ic chip there dose not seem to be a electrolytic capacitor on the output side which I found strange but there might be a reason for this

Traces on this board are not very good they coming loose from the board so I do not want to do much more shit to it unless I have to ( one note there are no markings on this board for any part that are on this board )

I will do this if it fails again in a short time again ( or - I am going to part it out and get another used one and recap it ) [ I have a project that I have in mind for this auto transformer ]

Keep one thing in mind that it is running 24 hours a day 7 days a week and 12 month a year and over 5 years

This is about 43800 hours and capacitors have an hour rating and how many hours is this ?

I have had this line conditioner plug in now over night and it seems to work correctly again so we will see if it stays working

maybe bump up the cap voltage.

I was thinking the same thing if it fails again real soon

            Well an update

It has been running for 23 hours now and everything seems to be working correctly

So far so good I going to call it a successful repair

Re: 110 Volt Line Conditioner ( 12 volt regulator cap failure repair once before)

i was thinking, maybe line-spikes are killing the cap
if you get a 200v spike, the transformer will convert it down and you get an 80% increase across the cap

              does this thing have MOV's?

                It has MOV's.
It looks like AC Line conditioner and AC Voltage regulator.
What is the model number of this TRIPP LITE?
