They won't. Only the Tualatin-S (512k L2) versions supported SMP.

      Re: Dual Celeron Weirdness Build....

      Darn. I think I have:

at least two S370 1200 Celeron Tualatins (assumed good)
one assumed working S370 500/66 Mendocino
one working S370 300A/66 Mendocino known to work at 450/100
one broken slot-1 300A/66 Mendocino that used to work at 450/100
      one slot-1 P2-233

      Two slotkets

and a dual slot-1 board that only can take four "x16" 256M SIMMs, else can only take 128M SIMMs for a max of 512M...

I really don't want to muck with machines that can't take 1GB SDRAM as I run Gentoo on all my machines, hence one of the celeron 1200's is in a single S370 board that has two "x4" 512M SIMMs and a 256M SIMM for 1.25GB.

...and another one concluded... The case isn't the greatest of quality, but its decent...and in good condition. Fine for this build, which isn't too terribly valuable, it's just a strange SMP novelty.

Pics as promised for this goofy little build....

        Innards...

        CPU's

Butt shot. IO plate with the case fit this motherboard. I am out of blanks for those 2 punched out ports (1 serial, 1 parallel).

Totally awesome POST screen showing both CPU's.

XP would be ok on this, but Win2k is a bit better performance-wise on CPU's this slow.

        Up & running.....FF12 as usual.

        Specs as follows:
        Asus P2L97-DS
        2x Celeron 533's
512mb SDRAM (supports 1gb EDO or 512mb SDRAM, I chose the faster option)
        Nvidia RIVA TNT2 64mb GPU
        Adaptec U2 SCSI Controller
        AWE64 Sound
        18gb 10k RPM SCSI HDD
        Plextor 6Plex SCSI cdrom
        Attached Files

          Awesome!

Looking at this picture makes me all nostalgic:

You just can beat the minimalistic look on those beige cases.

I see the HDD is also SCA type with one of those SCA->SCSI adapters. That's what I got on the NetServer PC mentioned in my previous posts in this thread. At one point, SCA HDDs were abundant and cheap on eBay. Now, not so much. Still decent performers, too - at least the 10k an 15k ones. Only annoyance is the noise, IMO.

By the way, what PSU did you end up using? Looks decent to say the least.

The PSU is a Morex 250w, originally came with THIS CASE, which I bought new in the mid 90's. It had to be recapped, but is otherwise pretty solid.

I keep a constant vigil for smaller scsi/sca hdd's, 9.1gb drives are super for these builds, as they don't require a lot of storage....and the drives can be had cheap....but yes, their availability is dwindling...

I'm looking for some more 36G SCA disks for a hot swap bay...
I still have a 9.1G UW disk somewhere... I used to run Linux off of it but it's gotten too small for a modern setup

Ha! First time I hear anyone mention this brand on here.

I bet it's solid and well-designed inside. I have a 235W Morex PSU myself - was the first PSU I ever picked up from Craigslist. "As-is" condition, of course. I traveled some miles to get it, but it tuned out to be worth it. Just needed a recap and a fan job. Very solid after that. Gonna get around to posting it someday too.

Hmm, looks like I missed that thread. More curious to see more shots of that other case from back in your gaming days - particularly the stickers on the side panels. I have pictures of mine as well - it was a ghetto rig back then. And with a PowMax PSU to top it all off. (Though not the worst of PowMax PSUs)

I think I have a few not in use. 7k RPM and way too loud due to BB spindles. Been sitting for ages, though.

                  I'll take 'em....bearing noise doesn't bother me....gives it character!

                    Hehe, you're right about that.
A few of my techie buddies really liked my NetServer's bootup sound:
                    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...3&postcount=41

Anyways, I'll have a dig for those HDDs to see what they were. Been a few years since I put the box at the back of my closet. Might need to move a few PCs to get to it (but no CRTs, though).

Love spindle noise as well. In about 20 years, I'll have some drives with some character to them. Got at least 4 WD Black drives in service. A couple of them (in my main computer) have close to 20k POH.
Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

My computer doubles as a space heater.

Asus Q550LF (Old main laptop, 2014-2022) - Decommissioned and stripped due to a myriad of problems, the main battery bloating being the final nail in the coffin.

                          Finally dug them out, lol.
A bit disappointed with myself - only found two HDDs in there. I thought there were more of them. eBay receipt verified that's the correct count, though (I received 5 total, 3 of which I put into my NetServer.)

                          The two free HDDs are:
                          - Maxtor Atlas 10k III - 320 [SCA type]
                          - IBM 9 GB [SCA type]
... and also some kind of a Dell server hot-swap tray (I thought that was a drive too ).
Just have to check them if they work too and possibly LLF. Looks like I never did that?

Bleh. The NetServer is playing dead with me again - POSTs and then freezes before the summary screen. Can't get to CMOS either. Will have to set up a separate system to test these drives with an add-on SCSI card... and pull data from my own drives too, while at it. If all fails, I might just get rid of all my SCSI stuff to ya ... will see.
