    The place i work at also does data recovery. We have had many completely failed drives where the SMART system did not report anything wrong. This is common in drives that have been hit or dropped.

    With today's high-capacity drives you never use the whole surface all the time, so if you drop your laptop and the HDD in it has a minor head crash, sometimes that will happen in an area where old data is stored. You will only know about it when you try to access that portion of data again...
