i used to have a collection of neons from things,

you can get flat-faced ones with a reflector in them for behind panels.
you can also get them in many colours using a combination of different gasses or a phosphor coating in the glass.

blue or purple neons are nice.

unfortunatly the ali sellers wont sell a mixed bag, only single colour packs.

If you half the current, getting half brightness, you get 8X longer life.
Nixies age the same way as neon lamps, although nixies run on DC. The debate says it's the electrodes sputtering, so mercury is added for longer life just like in fluorescent tubes.
Specialty neon lamps with low/super stable firing voltage have radioactive isotopes added to the gas.

I still have my Radio Shack Goofy Lamp P-box kit, wired for the ring counter which is just bizzare neon lamps can make counters or and gates etc.
