Re: Subwoofer auto on/off: Taga Harmony Platinum SW-10 v.2

Great news, I replaced the orange cap (330 uF) with a new 470 uF and that increased the standby timeout from 2 minutes to 4m15s. I'm super happy!

Now to increase the timeout even more, could I safely replace that cap with a 560 or 680 uF one?

I also bought some spares, among which some 150K and 680K resistors. I could potentially replace R310 (currently 330K) with one of these.

Yes, you can use a larger capacitance but it will be easier to increase the resistor R310 330K to may be 680K which will double up the time or put in 1M pot so you can vary the time.
BTW, did you check the capacitance of the 330uF to see if its capacitance has drop or it may have leakage current.
BTW, the existing delayed time is 330K x 330uF = 108.9 seconds (about 2 minutes, which is why they said no problem found).
I cannot find the spec sheet of this sub woofer to see what the time delayed is supposed to be.

Yea as far as I know there is no spec sheet. But 2 minutes is a bit conservative to take as a timeout...

So now you can make it longer as needed, so there was no problem with the unit, jut the time is set too short by the MFG. Most sub-woofer has about 15~20 minutes for time delayed. So we are good now.

              Hey budm

So I replaced R310 with a 680K resistor and the cap with a 680 uF one. The timeout is now about 15 minutes!

I only had the impression I had to turn up the volume of the amp quite a bit before the sub would automatically switch on, but that could've been just my impression.

In any case, this is far better than it was. Thanks a lot!

Great! I hope they did not set the audio detection sensitivity too low from the MFG either.
You can make it more sensitive by changing the negative feedback resistor R301 from 22K to higher value but not too high, may something like 47K.

Okay I'm gonna do that! I just noticed the mrs watching TV with the sub on standby, so it must be that.

with the 47K it will not switch on. i will try the 22K again and see what happens

i think it died. with the 47K, when I switched it on, I heard the relay and that was its last sign of life I got. will do a bit more testing tomorrow

So you put the 22K back in place but the relay is still not kick in? Check the DC on the cap after the D301 to see if it has voltage to turn on the transistor, also check pin 8 of the opamp to make sure it has VCC.

Also check to make sure all the cables are in place and your soldering works are OK.

no voltage over pin 1 and 8 of the en555

and i couldnt measure any voltage over that cap but i figure i am a bit more of a newbie than you think, so i'm not entirely sure if I did this right

my solder works are not the greatest but I did a continuity check on whatever I touched and all seems to be connecting fine.

Can I see the pictures of that area you worked on may be I can spot soemthing? Right now it does not work is due to no Voltage to run the ICs.

OK, the VCC for both ICs in the timer circuits and the pre-amp are supplied from that filter cap as shown in the picture. So you need to find out if you have voltage at the two legs of the cap as shown.

So that means the small switching power supply circuit, small transformer TR801 and a SMD IC close by, is not working. Changing that resistor should not cause the power supply to die.
May be the cables that supplies the AC to the board are not seated or the fuse is blown.
Please check the resistance on the two legs of that cap to see if it has very low resistance, the meter should show low resistance first and then as the cap is charged up, the resistance should rise.

yes the cap does charge up. it starts at 0 kOhm and then increases by 2 kOhm per second i am measuring, but whether the sub is switched on or off (with a sound signal on the input) doesnt affect it

So it dose not have shorted output, BTW, you do not measure resistance in the circuits with power applied.
We need to find out then why the switching power supply stops working, it can be bad IC or bad startup cap.
Try heating the area of the switching power supply area that has 'CAUTION HIGH VOLTAGE' with hair dryer for a few minutes, then apply the power to see if the voltage on the filter will come on.
