Subwoofer auto on/off: Taga Harmony Platinum SW-10 v.2

    Hi guys

I'm having a problem with my subwoofer that I'm attempting to fix. The thing is that the timeout for auto switch-off is just about 1 minute. As you can imagine, it switches off and on quite frequently during TV programs and even movies.

I already tried increasing the sub volume in my AVR, but that didn't help. Even setting the sub at +10db and the main speakers at -10db doesn't help. The timeout delay of 1 minute is just too short, as there are many movies and TV programs that don't send low frequencies for this amount of time interval. I also tested different cables.

I already sent the sub back to the manufacturer, but the guy in charge said that after testing it, their conclusion was that the problem is my AVR. I don't agree.

The sub in particular is a Taga Harmony Platinum SW-10 v.2. The manual has about 2 pages without any schematics.

I'm good at technology in general but not particularly in electronic design and repair. So here's my thought process and pictures I took after opening the sub.

On the PCB I can see a bordered area marked "Caution, High voltage". On the border at that area is a relay, it looks like it's connecting the main board with the high voltage area. My common sense says that this relay must be the one taking care of the auto-standby.

On the low voltage side of the relay:
    - one pin goes to a transistor of which I think one leg is connected to GND
    - other pin goes to a 47 Ohm resistor and then a cap of 330 uF.

I was thinking of replacing the 330 uF cap with a 680 uF cap (biggest electrolytic cap I could find with the same diameter, which is 8mm) but I would 1) really need a second opinion on this because I'm just guessing here really and 2) if that would double the standby timeout from one to two minutes, that still may not be enough.

    Specs of the relay:
    cirrus logic
    jzc-32f
    005HS
    pick up voltage: 3.75 V
    drop out voltage: 0.25 V
    max allowable voltage: 6.5 V

If you guys could share your insight and some of your magic, that would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Subwoofer auto on/off: Taga Harmony Platinum SW-10 v.2

Does it have LEDS that change the color from RED (Standby) to green when it receives the audio signal? It can be the timing cap problem in the audio detector circuit. Does it change to red after 1 minute of not seeing audio signal?
Similar problem to this one, read post 57 and on:
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...t=17168&page=3

Can we see the straight shot pictures of the top and bottom side of both circuit boards?
That section that you circle is the power transformer and the cap are for the switching power supply, that is the filter cap. You have two relays on that board, one is the power relay, another one is the speaker relay.
I think I see the timer section, there are two 8-pin SMD IC on the bottom side which are more likely to be OP-AMPs.

      Hi Budm

Good thing point me to the LED. There is only one LED colour: red. And I inspected its behavior more closely now, which I obviously should have done before.

      - when the sub detects an input signal: red light turns on, I hear a clicking sound, and sub hums softly.
      - 2 minutes after switching off music (not 1 minute as I stated earlier): I hear a relay click again, but a different sound this time. The hum disappears and the red light starts to slowly fade out which takes about another minute until it completely disappeared.

I will make some more pictures this evening.

OK, it can be as simple as the timing capacitor losts its capacitance so the delayed off time is shortened, most sub woofers are designed to stay on for about 15 minutes after the audio is not detected then it goes in to standby mode.
I believe it is that orange cap 330uF 25V in that timing section I have marked is the timing cap, you can try parallel another 330~470uF cap in parallel with it to see if it will stay on longer or remove the old one and replace with another cap incase the old one has leakage and no longer hold the charge like it should. There are 6 electrolytics caps in that section, the value for the timing cap has to be more than 100uF to give a long delayed time.

Can you read the P/N on the two 8-pin SMD ICs on the top left corner of the board where the timer circuit is? Did you try changing the cap 330uF 25V (Orange cap)?

These IC's on the back of the board?

I didn't source parts yet, I don't have any caps lying around here . I'll order. Any aluminium electrolytic cap 330 - 470 uF 25V will do?

OK, the NE555 is the timer IC, the second one is FA455? Is there an '8' after the 5? May by dual OPAMP 4558? Thanks for the good pictures. I will have to do some details tracing of the circuit next.
So you do not have any electrolytics cap at all?

Sending you good pictures is the least I can do! Here's one more attempt.

No electronic components in the house at all here I'm afraid. But I work at a company who distributes them, so it shouldn't be too hard to get some .

OK, here the best I can do using your pictures, so basically the NE555 TIMER (R310 (330K) and 330uF25v E303?) is the one that will stay on once it is triggered (pin 2 of NE555 goes LO) by the audio signal (processed by OPAMP 4458, Q301, 1N4148s) then the output at pin 3 of NE555 will drive the relay driver transistor.
BTW, with your good pictures I am able to create the paper PCB to trace out the connections.

I see now that E301 says 10 uF on the PCB but the cap itself is a 100 uF. Could it matter? You can see the cap on the closeup I made of the timing area.
