Vizio tv black screen & amber light

Happened randomly when I turned on the tv one day. Not real experienced in tv repairs but would like to know what's wrong with it and save some money.

Well, first you’re going to want to read the beginners post where you will find some really good fundamental things, on how to test some components once you open it up and then also read about how to post your pics of the boards inside. I am way to new to help other then with that simple stuff and that I am in the process of fixing a Vizio with bad caps on it and it all came from the folks on this forum. Good luck.

Re: Vizio tv black screen & amber light

We are going to need the entire story of what the tv is doing. Vizio light goes from standby (amber) to ON (white) but shows nothing, or turns back off, freezes. ect ect ect....... Be as specific as possible.

As far as pictures, Get atleast one of the power supply, main board, and one of the entire back of the set.

Re: Vizio tv black screen & amber light

I turn the tv on and the light stays amber with a black screen but I can hear it running on the inside but otherwise no audio. Could you tell me where these boards are? All I have is the back case off

Re: Vizio tv black screen & amber light

Post a picture of the entire back of the tv with the cover off and then we can help identifying the seperate boards.

So the tv basically won't turn on at all. Does the vizio logo change to white quickly then back to orange?

The exposed board on the back is the power supply. The main board is below the power supply under the metal cover. Can you get a sharper photo of just the power supply. If you can get a clearer photo use the manage attachments (paper clip). Get the photo as close to 2000 x 2000. I use paintbrush to shrink my pictures down.

With all due respect, you'll need to provide more info and better pictures if you want to receive additional help. Once the TV is on, does the remote still work (in particular, can you turn it off without unplugging it)? Can you change inputs? Can you use a flashlight and see any faint images? Have you searched the other threads in this forum for common Vizio problems?

Excellent! Then you are already aware that the more detailed information you provide, as well as quality of pictures, the more help you will get. While you are gathering that information, if you could answer what I've asked someone can point you in the right direction in the meantime.

Re: Vizio tv black screen & amber light

Well, you have 4 major boards in this TV that can cause the problem you are having.

Power supply board: right now the standby power supply is working but the rest (12V, 24V, main 5V) may not be working due to not getting the signal from the main board to turn them on. Or those section of the power supply is bad due to bad caps, bad connections, etc. Or it senses short circuits so it stays in shutdown mode.

Main Board: bad main board not working due to bad regulators, processor, bad solder joints so it does not send the signal to turn on the power supply, T-CON board, inverter board.

Backlights inverter boards: it has shorted circuits due to MOSFET's, IC, Transformers, bad connections, bad lamps assemblies, etc. so it causes the power supply to go into shutdown, or sends an error signal to the main board to tell the TV to stay in shutdown mode.

T-CON; blown fuse due to short circuits, failed IC, bad connections, so it sends the error signal to the main board to shutdown.

As you can see, we are trying to troubleshoot the problems without having the TV or the boards in front of us the look at. Good pictures are the only things we have to go by and it can be real hard to do by just looking at the pictures of both sides of the boards and try to trace out the connections on the boards to locate the problems and to provide the test points for you to look at and check the voltages.
                                  It is not that simple.

Take the pirtures that will show how all the boards are hooked up together, then individual pictures of the top side of the boards for now.
