Very true. I had a motorhome (older) with an Onan genset. Someone had messed with the adjustments, and it was producing about 170 VAC.
All of the 120 v appliances had suffered various degrees of damage. Including the destruction of the $300+ "safety control boards" in the forced air heater and the water heater.
On an Onan genset, the rpm is set by the position of the air-vane governor and not by either of the adjustments near the carburetor. Those are for controlling output frequency when the load current changes. If those are messed with it is unlikely the generator can operate correctly unless you can obtain the factory service procedures and follow them to a "T"
