I added a modification for a higher power IR transmitter inside my particular PDA - a project not for beginners, although you can build a simple compact IR repeater and attach the sensor to the transmitting IR LED on the IrDA port (use a camera with a screen and transmit IrDA data to find the transmitting IR LED).
This modification resulted in an increase in working distance to 7 metres.
