    How does optical alignment work?

    Hi,
I see a lot of BGA Rework stations that offer optical alignment and I'm curious about how it works.

I guess you need two right angle prisms placed in a cube with a mirror on one side like in the attached picture (sorry paint is all I had) but what determines the image size you can see and how does the camera that captures the image work?

I tried googling but can nowhere find a diagram, so if anyone could draw one in paint or whatever, or has some info I'd be thankful.

I've got a LY-G720 BGA station on order - it has optical alignment and it should arrive early next week.

I've never used a BGA station before either with or without optical alignment but I will be posting my findings here. I'll be happy to post some pics of the alignment system if I can get to it without breaking anything, if that helps

That would be great, thanks. Hope you enjoy your station.

Re: How does optical alignment work?

I had a look at the optical alignment on my machine

The pull out camera is like a clear glass cube, you can see right the way through it looking down from the top. There does seem to be a mirror on at least one side of the cube, I couldn't see that it had prisms inside.

There is a ring of LEDs around the glass block edges so it's a bit hard to look into it properly because of the glare

        I hope that helps

            Hi again,
if it's not too much trouble, could you measure the size of the cube?
Doesn't need to be super precise.

            Thanks

Its 70mm cubed though the LEDs around the top and bottom obscure some of that

Here are some pics looking the cube from different angles.
