8 months eh? That IS a new record. Just kidding.

OK. First of all, don't worry about replacing the D22 schottky diode for 4 reasons.
    1. The newer PSU's have a better diode. 2. We remember what happened last time you got into that. 3. You can always use a surge protector. And 4. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" my Grandpa used to say.

After your friend replaces that capacitor. With the PSU all by itself, and not connected to the main board or the inverter. You'll need to turn over the PSU. Plug it in. And you'll only get one voltage output. The 5 volt standby. I marked the ground and the positive connector pin in the lower left of the picture. That should be 5 volts or above. And steady. No fluctuations. Mine showed 5.2 volts and steady.

All the other voltages will power up later when the main board is connected and sends back the PS_ON (power supply on). But we don't need to worry about that right now.
Just look for that 5V standby voltage on the pin marked in the picture.

How can I tell if this PSU is a newer model? It's obviously been lying around for a while...
If the D22 is resoldered it will be undertaken by my friend don't you worry!

It may be 9 month even, I'll look back when I get home

      Thank you LJ7!

May have a date on the board near the manufacturers name or what is the version number on the barcode on the back of the board see pic here

Re: Dell 3008wfp faulty power supply

I'll be home in about an hour, results / findings will be posted then

EDIT: OK, first finding is that the boar doesn't even have a revision number (serial 6723000009P10) so I assume it's an A01

          I will test voltages now!

OK: The pin you labelled LJ7 fluctuates between 7.12 and 7.09 volts

for comparison the dead board was an A03, and that broke

Sounds a bit high to me, but may be ok at least its higher - check your meter/battery say on a 1.2/1.5v battery

Hmm, I tried it against some 3.7v Nokia batteries and they all came out as 5V. I will try a different meter!
EDIT: a 1.5V battery read as 2.2V. Safe to proceed?

Sorry had to go and make and eat tea.
Yes I think it will be ok - as batterys go in meters some of them read high though they usually have a "low Battery" indicator.

No whistles no pops! I have disassembled it again and am ready for testing! I would say the dented cap has bulged very slightly. I shall work on replacing that first. If you know anything else obvious to check, please shout it out

                              Thanks!

I think ask your relative to replace that cap then we start with a level playing field

Had my eye on one of these on Ebay last night - but it went for over £240 in a non working state (won't power on).... blimey that's nuts !
