I need a check on gaming system

    Hi all
My son wants to build a gaming system and has selected the following items:

    CPU Intel® Core™ i5-4690K :
    http://www.alternate.it/Intel(R)/Cor...roduct/1143715

    Case Zalman Z11 Plus:
    http://www.alternate.it/Zalman/Z11-P...product/940588

SSD SAMSUNG SSD 120GB Serie 840 Evo 2,5":

    RAM Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9R:

    Hard Disk WD 1000Gb SATA3 7200Rpm 64Mb WD10EZEX: http://www.emall.it/scheda_art.htm?S...HOP=1&LST=_BB_

    MOBO 1150 MSI Z97 Gaming 3:

Graphic card MSI GeForce GTX 760 2 GB GDDR5:

PSU XFX XTR Series 750W PSU 750W:

HEATSINK COOLER MASTER HYPER 412 SLIM:
    http://www.nexths.it/v3/flypage.php?...R-H412-16PK-R1

I would like to know if you think everything is OK or if there are components that are incompatible.

For the power supply I would prefer this one:

    SEASONIC - M12II-750 evo
    http://www.eprice.it/alimentatori-SEASONIC/d-5216624

About the CPU I found this one

    http://www.hrw.it/componenti-e-netwo...04-300825.aspx

Which is less expensive than K version but if I'm not wrong it is blocked and can't be overclocked, I admit I don't know if it is useful to have an unlocked CPU.

If overclocking isn't a concern I would honestly go for an E3-1230v3. Looks to be the same price but it's a fair bit faster than the i5 is - basically the same features and such as an i7 but with shit overclock ability and lower turbo.

    http://www.alternate.it/Intel(R)/E3-...oduct/1063411?

For the power supply I would probably go with the Seasonic myself, I've never had much of an issue with them.

If he has a desktop now I would also have him reuse the case, hard drive, etc to cut back on costs. While I know some disagree, I personally feel that when building a system you should get a good case and a good power supply as when building a new system those are the two things easiest to reuse.

Hi Compgeke, thank for your suggestion.

I searched on internet and I found some discussion about using i5-4670K vs Xeon E3 1230 V3 but not comparison with i5-4690k.

For what I understood with i5 you can overclock but I don't know if it will be necessary for what my son will do with the PC.

Reading the CPU specs I saw it supports DDR3-1600 so maybe I should search a different type respect to my son's list.

About the case and HD you are right but my son wants a new case and the HD he is using now it's an old 80GB PATA, moreover if I should reuse the cabinet I should trash the MOBO, PSU etc.... Since the PC is still working well, I can clean it up and donate to primary school, they always need PC even if they are old.

I will be back if I have new questions and doubts and I will let you know my progress in building this system.

      Ciao

Re: I need a check on gaming system

i5-4670K only has 4 cores and no hyper-threading, the e3 1230 v3 has hyper-threading so those 4 cores can do 8 logical cores. Very useful for a server, might be useful for multi-thread games, but for older games or games not multi-threaded then pure speed is needed, which is where overclocking comes in.

Really depends on the type of games you intend to play do some research if more than 50% of your games are multi-threaded then E3 1230 would be best, if not then 4670k would be your choice.

        I have the e3 1230 v2 for my fileserver, it's a beast.

I would swap out the hard-drive with a black series, the blues don't do well in terms of longevity.

Also do you really need a 760? I got a 670 I can practically max anything out with it. Maybe a 750 might be a better? or is your son a hardcore gamer?

I'd personally use an SSD for the main drive Intel or Samsung 840.

            Hi Mad
I have already ordered the Xeon and GT 760 and the other items.

It is a little complicated to explain everything, to make it short my son asked to his friend which has already a game system close to this one.
My son at the moment plays on-line and has no a clear idea about future games, but as I promised him to build a system together if he finished the secondary school well, now I have to keep my promise since he got the maximum score.
I have to add that last Christmas I didn't gave him a present, that's why now I'm spending some money (probably too much), but I want to give him some trust and I hope he starts to interest about computer... and maybe in the future he can upgrade the system based on real needs. And of course I hope the system will be used also for high school starting in September.

I consider myself too old to play with over-clock, games etc... I'm able to repair things and OS (thanks to information found on internet and my experience) but nowdays things change so quickly and I have no time to stay updated.
I don't like to spend money if it is not necessary but considering I saved money on my side regarding computer, I'm still working with an old PC I built in 2004 with K8V-X and Athlon 3200+, now I can spend something for my son.

@diif: the Samsung 840 SSD will be the drive system.

Re: I need a check on gaming system

On Tuesday I received all components and I built the PC.

I had few problem because I didn't see some instruction: at first the PC didn't start because the power button was disconnected, since the front case can be removed it is possible to disconnect the cable... I discovered it after 30 minutes....

At the end the system is up and runninge very very well.

              Here some picture.

              Thanks Compgeke and diif
