Did you inspect the brushes and the commutators?

It is like driving on the road real fast then you will not notice all the bumps on the road, but if you drive real slow you will feel all the bumps and holes on the road. The commutators and the brush surfaces may be too rough right now.

Commutator is fine, I cleaned it up.

The brushes on the other hand are somewhat unevenly worn in a leading-trailing edge direction and I could have put them back swapping them around I suspect. I will turn each one 180 degrees tomorrow if I get time as it means stripping the entire mixer body again, sigh...

Is it possible to grind/sand the brushes flat again? Asking as it will be some time before I can get new ones.

A901e Kenwood Chef

I have a Kenwood Chef 901e, We replced the motor brushes as they were worn out and now the chef is turning on at only 1 speed.

I have replcaed the Triac and the .15UF and .1 Uf capacitor but it made no difference at all. Please if anyone has any input it would be much apprecitaed.

I have also repaired a chef A901 with motor speed issues. I had already replaced the caps and resistors. I found that there are two screws on the edge of the motor. If you unscrew these slightly and then adjust the pressure on the arm slowly till it regulates the speed. The speed now works correctly from slow to fast. There is a contact which has some feedback to the trigger circuit which maintains the motor speed. the gap is about 1cm/ or 1/2 in but could vary slightly between models. Both gaps have to be the same. Anyone wish to add their twopennuth?

Further to my post the distance can be varied. By adjusting the screws in and out in line with checking the operation of the speed control will correct any speed issues. As the motor has to be outside of the machine to do this it is advisable to strap it down and take precautions against electric shock. It seems there is a contact which opens and closes which triggers the triac. Old fashioned mechanical means.

I just want to pop a line here saying thanks for all the info in this thread, it might be old but then so am I and so is the A901e that I'm restoring ;-)
Special thanks to mips for the diagrams, they were really helpful in taking things apart, and will surely be again when i get to putting it all back together.
For anyone needing spare parts that hasn't found them yet, kenwoodchefrestore.co.uk is very helpful and gives a very fast service both for emails and orders.

Having replaced the capacitors, triac and resistor my motor is now running nicely, and I've got the speed control working. As the post from biker48 (above) mentions the 2 screws (with the springs) at the far end of the pcb from the speed control knob do indeed adjust the speed range of the speed control knob. I have a memory of reading somewhere out there that the speed of the motor should be 45rpm, but not sure at what point on the speed control knob it should be this speed. Anyone out there have any wisdom on this?

hello, sorry i forgot to mention i am fitting a new triac since testing it, it appears that has been taken out too. The guy i got the wrong caps off did say the traic could take out the caps. Thanks for the links i will have a good read of them.

MAN 0.15X1000=150NF 150/1000=0.15UF
0,22X1000=220NF 220/1000=0.22UF
man 150NF250V OK.
