Abit KA7 & KA7-100 recapping mods and tips [New Pics]

Ok, there's been a flood of KA7's coming across my bench, and tons of questions filling my inbox on this board. Yes it uses those really crappy 8mm JPCON capacitors, and NO I DO NOT replace them with lousy 8mm caps! 8mm capacitors are VERY difficult to come by from a quality manufacturer, and they are VERY expensive in the event you do find some!

I always use 10mm caps when recapping this board, with a little ingenuity and technique, they will fit and function better than the board did new!!

The only really tricky spot on the KA7 using 10mm caps is those in front of the CPU slot. You will see from the photo's that they need to be installed at a slight angle. This prevents them from interfering with the CPU. It will also help them run a little cooler, not being in contact with the CPU cartridge. These caps get very warm when the board is powered up, even if the system is at an idle. Because of this, I recommend using 10volt caps in place of the 6.3volt caps around the CPU slot. This insures that you won't ever have this failure on your KA7 again well beyond its useful lifetime.

I have written a detailed article outlining the recapping of the KA7/KA7-100. You can view it at: http://www.kabalsrealm.com/projects/ka7/

Feel free to post if you have any questions!!
    Good Luck!!
