    Comparison of LED Backlight Testers

    Hi All,

There seems to be a lot of devices on the market that claim to be LED backlight testers, ranging in price from $20 to $$$. Does anyone have experience with these particular types and can chime in if they're adequate for LED TV repair? I'm in North America so looking for devices that run on 100V but I included all voltages just in case it's useful for others.

And yes, technically one could build a tester themselves, but if you're like me and are not very technically inclined then you'd rather spend $20 than learn how to solder :p

Type #1 shopjimmy.com SID GJ2C LED TV Backlight Tester

    or much cheaper here: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/GJ2C-0-320V-...v7UQ:rk:1:pf:0

    Type #2 GJ2C alternate version
    ~28USD: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/GJ2C-0-320V-...ZsDg:rk:5:pf:0

Which one of these units do find is worth the cost of it
    9 PC LCD Monitor
    6 LCD Flat Screen TV
30 Desk Top Switching Power Supply
10 Battery Charger Switching Power Supply for Power Tool
6 18v Lithium Battery Power Boards for Tool Battery Packs
1 XBox 360 Switching Power Supply and M Board
    25 Servo Drives 220/460 3 Phase
6 De-soldering Station Switching Power Supply 1 Power Supply
    1 Dell Mother Board
    15 Computer Power Supply
1 HP Printer Supply & Control Board * lighting finished it *

These two repairs where found with a ESR meter...> Temp at 50*F then at 90*F the ESR reading more than 10%

1 Over Head Crane Current Sensing Board ( VFD Failure Five Years Later )
2 Hem Saw Computer Stack Board

All of these had CAPs POOF
All of the mosfet that are taken out by bad caps

I don't know lol I was hoping someone could tell me which are good and which are bad

My aim is to spend ~$20 on a device that performs as well as a ~$50 one

Re: Comparison of LED Backlight Testers

I got interested in the whole LED Backlight Tester gig some time ago with the view that it might speed up testing of said back lights, and came across a cheap example of the SID GJ2C I think I paid around £10.00 via Ebay. What I found along with others that have tried these is they don't really develop sufficient drive to adequately test the LED panel, kind of a good thing really as they can produce upwards to 300 volts across the probes and to me that is a potential safety issue.

Overall findings then, having one is better than not having one, although they give very mixed results with bad led's often passing, I mean see what others say but I have mostly gone back to my old testing methodology. A variable high voltage supply (upto 60 volts) with current sense set) I can usually test one or more complete strips with this at varying loads.

        Hope this helps

They all supply too low testing current....good thing is that you can adjust current but limit is R-C direct power from mains...20-30mA...not enough...I want 100mA, sometimes 250mA !
and sometimes you have to wait few minutes with powered led bar to show up a problem.
CV CC lab supply is perfect for testing separate led bars...never had a problem with that.

Output of 300Vdc @ 30mA is 9 Watts of power, so way you can do any mod to those LED tester to make it deliver 300V @100mA = 30 Watts.
Those LED tester is not for 100% proving if the LED's are good or bad but it can tell if you have open circuit condition or not without disassemble the panel. It also help to verify if the video function is working or not if the backlights power supply went and you want to verify if video function is still OK or not by being able to light up the screen with the LED tester.
