Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

It always seems to be the two outer tabs.

BTW, I have recently seen two 26" LCD TV with Chi-Mei panel, bad tab bonds as well, different symptoms though.

When will it end? Wonder if bottom mounted tabs will make a difference to reliability.

Older Panasonic plasmas are great for reliability, usually using Panasonic, Rubycon, Nichicon and United Chemicon capacitors, all excellent manufacturers. The TH-42PZ70BA has a single shorted fet problem (one of about 30 devices), usually going wrong after 6 years, otherwise, very good. Seems the newer ones aren't so reliable though :/

Bud, have you ever tackled plasmas? You seem to stick to LCD. I like to repair plasmas more though, lots of high power electronics...

I've temp repaired a Toshiba 46", however it has gone bad again. When I go back in, I want to try to make this a more permanent fix.

No Plasma for me, too heavy for me to handle them, my backs are not in good condition.
@Cliff, what did you use, rubber pad, etc? My fix is only experiment, only ime will tell also. How long did your repair last?

Don't blame you, hardest part for me is carrying them into the dorm through small corridors, did get a 50" Panasonic G10B (mid 2010 model), which was almost as light as an old 42" LCD, but very awkward to carry.

I used thick double sided tape. Two layers thick. Repair lasted about 3 months with my wife watching it about 20 hours a day!

The main key is to get the contacts between the PCB and the Flex board secured by using pressure.

Bud, did you sold these TVs or do you kept them for yourself?
How confident are you about this repair, that actually will last for a long time?

I would not sell these unless I added the disclaimer that I don't warranty the repair and sell it very cheaply.

When I was working on one of these TVs I told you guys that those chips on the ribbon cables get to hot. Back then I didn't have a way of measuring the temperature, but it was definitely way to hot.
I have tried Aluminum sheet metal strips, but it didn't work. Maybe it wasn't a good contact between them.
With these new pads and Aluminum strips, in my opinion it would be fixed for sure.
Next time I find a TV with tab problem, I will try it out.
These TVs NEED MORE COOLING. The heat kills them.

New ones moved the tabs down to the bottom of the screen. But now if water is spilt on the TV screen, the tabs are at risk of being damaged. It's surprising that they run so hot. Samsung is the only panel manufacturer with such widespread failures. LG and Sharp have some issues, but they're pretty rare.

I have fixed a bunch of these, all Samsung screens, usually the larger Sony sets. All are well past 1 year after the repair and they are used daily. No return of the problem. One of the sets (52 inch) is moved on a TV cart on a regular basis over bumps in the carpet/bare floor interface. I used vinyl bumpers from Crappy Tire and only on the tab that needed it. Check past threads. I have not sold any but I may because my fix seems to last.

You have any where putting pressure and thermal on the tabs DIDNT fix it? Mine is like that, and it didnt seem to change the problem. Im wondering if i have a bad TCON or cable or something

Here is the one I just did today. Very similar but a different model number: LN52A540P2F

It's been working for about an hour now.

I'll also keep this one to see how long this repair lasts.

I only used one thermal pad on the defective ribbon tab since I'm going to keep the tv and since it's also an experiment.

The thermal pad I'm using I got from a scrap tv set. I've been collecting those for other reasons, so, it came handy.

                                    Thanks for the thread @budm.

So you are applying pressure on the board side and not on the panel side?
This is for better heat transfer or to apply pressure to the tab?

The tab-to-panel bonding is usually good, it's the PCB-to-tab bonding or the IC-to-tab bonding that fails most often.
