nonstandard firmware in directv dvr hdd?

one of my business partners got a directv dvr that was nearly new and had been working.gutted it for the hdd which is a western digital green av 500gb.
he went to put it in a build and could not get it to detect.
i tested it and sure enough its dead.no spin.we already stripped the rest of the dvr so no way to try it in it again.custom firmware or just infant mortality failure?

Could be custom firmware, could be just a feature turned on. I've had some DVR WD 320GBs that were set to suspend at power on by firmware. They would not detect consistantly until the feature was turned off with a program. I thought they were dead too but not the case.
