    IBM xSeries 305

Fixed my friend's IBM X Series 305 1U server over the weekend....machine would fail if more than 2 sticks of RAM were installed.

I suggested that we clean it since his other server was very dusty.....BINGO! 14 bad caps! UCC KZGs again.

Replaced the bad caps (nine 6.3V 3300MFD and five 6.3V 820MFD) and all four slots can be populated with no errors. To make the story better, we got a PCI-X SATA card and found a 2.8GHz P4 in his junk box to replace the 2.4 with that night.

So now we have 4GB PC2100 ECC RAM, 1TB of disk on the SATA card, fresh caps and Ubuntu Server 10.10. Its a mean little file server with 2 1000mbps Ethernet ports.

I'm amazed it ran at all...the only thing keeping it up were some polymers scattered in with the KZGs. Power supply was full of Rubycons
Working...
