    Budget? New? Used?

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

I download youtube videos first, then watch them offline using vlc. My Internet speed is only 5 Mbps.

Budget around 1K and my current computer is 16 rears old.

Second hand16 year old Gateway P3 maxed out with 500MB ram running XP. Computer was full of bugs when I got it so I need to buy a new computer while I am still able to access Bad Caps forum.

If you want new a Dell OptiPlex or entry level Precision is probably a pretty safe bet:

                http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/...ision-desktops

Lenovo ThinkCentres are also a good option:
                https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/deskto...-id=M910_Tower

Alternatively if there is a shop near you that does custom builds that could be a good option if you aren't able/willing to build your own PC.

If you don't mind used you can pick up good retired 3-5 year (2nd/3rd gen I-series CPUs) business PCs for $100-300 on eBay, Newegg, Amazon, etc.. Not the "latest and greatest" but still more than enough for internet, office applications, etc. and miles ahead of an old P3 box.

I like using older used computers even though I can afford new ones. Mine is a E8500 dual core running Lubuntu. I paid $10 CDN, ten, dollars for it.

At 1K USD, you will have no problems finding a computer that will play youtube videos without stuttering.

Second hand16 year old Gateway P3 maxed out with 500MB ram running XP.
It would be hard pressed to find a lightweight linux distro to run on the above specs for youtube. Time to recycle the Gateway.

I actually downgraded from 15Mbps to 5Mbps to keep my bill as low as possible.

I agree with the above. There is no need to spend 1K USD just to watch youtube videos.

Anything 3-5 years old at $200 USD or less will be more than enough.

I spent $10 CDN on mine and also get free ones that are "non working" or "too slow" from others. When you remove all the bloat and just run a simple lightweight linux distro, you would be surprised at what you can do with a 10 year old CPU.

PS. Computers depreciate FAST. If you spend 1K today, that PC will be likely $250 five years from now. Invest the other $800 USD when the stock market crashes.

BTW, I think I have even seen refurbished PCs like the above on walmart.com?

Anyway, lots of options in the $200 range.

I saw similar specs on my local kijiji a couple of weeks back and the guy wanted $40 CDN and only lived 10 minutes away from me, but my dual cores are fast enough for what I need.

His asking price was low because the next day the ad was gone.

$40 CDN, today, will buy me an Intel/AMD dual core locally.

I know you guys can run Linux and fix computers but I cant.

This piece of junk just locked up attempting to post this I don’t have much time.

Actually, I heard stories about people buying old P3 systems for several hundreds of dollars on ebay.

Why pay so much for 16 year old PCs?

Some applications are run on P3 under DOS or Windows ME/2000 and apparently they don't run properly on a new faster machine due to clocking or some weird timing issues.

Or the very expensive proprietary one of a kind card/peripheral only runs on the ISA? slots and not the newer PCI, etc, stuff.

You should do some research to see what these sell for on ebay before getting rid of it.

It might be $0 or $300?

PS. My $10 CDN is a HP/Compaq 6000 SFF. Identical to this one at Newegg.

                            https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6671-_-Product

I bought 4 of them for $10 CDN each. I bought them because they had a free Win 7 upgrade to Windows 10. I only require Windows 10 to run tax software every April. Otherwise, I run linux on these computers.

That last part sucks as that would get you a rather nice pc. Why isn't it an option?

On the prebuilt stuff you will get old already way outdated pc for $1000 last I looked.

I think i have about $500 in mine using old case and psu and still games well although could use a ssd
                              and another 8gb ram.

                              Have a microcenter store near?

Just for a bit of sufin’ and YouTube I wouldn’t spend more than 350$ for it on some refurbished Maschine and a SSD running some Linux. I’ve resurrected all my old computers that way and they are fast as snot. 4GB Ram is a must and you won’t look back. I also run an old Core duo in some old refurbished Lenovo cash checkout computer (desktop). All I added was a small videocard, that’s it. I don’t see any need to spend 1k for that for what you want to do. A first gen I3 with 4GB RAM and a SSD to boot some Linux, will leave your socks rockin by themselves. Unless you want Windows 10... :puke:

you dont need to spend 1k to watch video's - most curbside pc's will do it if you drop windows.
