That's what I call an expensive piece of junk.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

I know Samxon GF is problematic, but geez, I didn't think Samxon GK series was bad.

I remember growing up reading Stereo Review and seeing all the positive reviews on the BW series speakers.

        Thanks for the "teardown".

I dont even trust ipods, mine which was just out of warranty had copletely lost audio in the right channel, then a year later it randomly died, and made a clicking sound from the internal speaker a few times, then totally dead.

Over $150 for a small thing that fits in your hand that doesnt last more than a year of less than 3 hours use a day! .....

Look on the bright side, for those of us who know how to repair stuff, it's dirt cheap if not free to acquire a lot of electronic toys and fix them to the point you feel they're MORE reliable than if you'd been given the same thing brand new.

I have to admit, these things sound great, the second one (later model) I open up which suppose to have been upgrade with better power supply, but I found bad caps (Su'scon) as well. Sorry for people that paid $500~600 for this thing.
They are sure hard to put the grills back on.

It doesn't surprise me one bit, my Polk Audio powered subwoofer is full of CapXons, you'd think for the price they charge for these things they could use good caps, but I guess saving a few cents on the caps boosts the profit margin, and since most audio equipment isn't too hard on caps they can get away with it most of the time. In fact the only relatively recent piece of audio equipment I have that has good caps is my Kenwood VR6070 home heather receiver which is 100% Elna and Cornell Dubilier.

I fixed a 500W Bose sub before, it had CrapXons in its amp. The problem however was a wire that came loose and shorted to the metal amp chassis.

                    Hi Budm,

I have the earlier version of the zeppelin (chrome back) the unit has just died, and research has pointed to power board, what capacitor would you use as a good replacement?

                    Thanks

That's actually what i've done with a bunch of power supplies

Also got a Jamo 200 sub for ~50$ that was "way too quiet" - culprits ended up being the gain pot and the dual-gang low-pass adjustment pot

                          Thank you.

Re: Bowers and Wilkins ZEPPELIN crappy caps

Just brought one of these full of, suscon capacitors. They are not physically bloated but most are open circuit:

                                      3 1500uf 16v all test fine
6 220uf 25v 4 open circuit the other 2 very high ESR and no capacitance
                                      6 100uf 16v caps all open circuit
                                      2 22uf 50v caps open circuit
                                      1 100uf 35v cap 40 ohms with 20uf left

I changed all the caps and the primary’s for high end power supply caps, also added some more heat sinks with thermal glue to the floating TO220 power transistors and output diode....

I can see why these power supplies throw tantrums, the units run very hot I don’t think the passive air intake from the speaker movement is enough to cool the unit properly. Bad design for the price of the units new, luckily I only paid £10 for mine faulty and it’s in mint condition I’ll grab some photos before I put it back together.

I feel like modern Samxon GK's are pretty decent. I usually replace a lot of Samxon when I see them if I have a better replacement but usually they test very good esr when removed.
