    Think it's called SB Link cause Creative developed it and it's their registered trademark

      If you ever used a card that relied on emulation like a Gravis Ultrasound MAX like I did, you know what a pain in the arse that shit was.
      Though the GUS worked with most games of the time and was later even supported natively.

      Still, protected mode games didn't run with the megaEM TSR, only with that SBOS crap (supported protected mode but AFAIR sounded really shitty because the GUS couldn't do FM Synthesis). Only later versions of megaEM supported protected mode...

      So in the end it comes to only a few options if you want DOS compatible Sound:

      a) an ISA Soundblaster Card like Soundblaster 16 (if possible with a General Midi Daughterboard like Yamaha DB50XG) or compatible
      b) a 100% hardware compatible one or something like that.


      c) use emulation and face problems...


      The Ducks Guts would be a gravis Ultrasound (MAX or ACE) with a Creative Labs Soundblaster 16 for Stereo sound if the GUS is not natively supported.
      For natively supported games the Gravis Ultrasound also supported some kind of positional Audio like in DOOM...

      In the later days where Miles Audio System was used, compatibility wasn't a big issue anymore because you only needed a Driver for that.

      Oh and another problem with emulation is the use of conventional memory.
      If you need 600k or even 610k concentional memory for some games, you're fucked pretty easily...

      I don't remember wich game it was, but in the olden days, one of the games I played needed 610 or even more conventional memory. So you did some 'start menu procramming' with various options where you don't load any driver you don't absolutely need for that game.
      The Keyboard driver was the first to go, then the CD-ROM drivers if you don't need it for that game...

          Thanks, you say just replace them with normal caps? Any reason why I should not use polymer caps?

              So would you take the same caps that @mockingbird posted or would you pick others?

              And do you think I still should replace some with Polymer caps? I have no experience replacing normal with polymer caps. So i have to go 100% on you all replying on my topic.

                As for me, I'd replace only the bad ones and the ones from known problematic series (HN/HM till 2005 etc.) with caps I took from dead boards, and most likely keep the rest… Guess that does not help you much

                    Just go with the list from Newark and replace all the caps. If you have the time and skill, then why not? It's not a good idea to start experimenting with, or paying a lot of money for polymers.

                    You could leave the audio circuit out if you're using an add-in sound card. But just to clarify, it is important to replace small caps in audio circuits. They do go short/open circuit there and cause the audio to stop working.
