Re: The Great Capacitor Showdown - Rubycon vs Panasonic vs Samxon

Why would you test something like Fuhjyyu when you already know what the result will be?
That's kind of like shooting your foot to see if bullets hurt.

Sorry, not giving up something I might patent one day to the internet.
I pretty much already described how to build one anyway.
    Not a real tough project.

That would indeed be the more scientific way......but it sure wouldn't be as much fun!! I don't think its the ripple thats killing the caps in these little demonboxes, its the heat.... In the end, using GX620USFF's, it would be a contest of which brands could stand the heat the longest. If the lytics were kept cool, they wouldn't likely fail at all and the test would never end...

Who said anything about keeping them cool? - LOL - hahahaha

I was thinkin' test caps mounted in a metal chassis with the load resistors inside the box and with a heater with a thermostat control to keep them up as close to 100C as practical. Would need a fan to circulate air and keep the heat inside even but not one to exchange inside-outside air.

It's ripple that creates the -internal- heat in caps.
With a static DC applied there is no current flow [and no heat generated internally] once they are charged up.
The only heat they'd get would be from ambient.

            The overall goal is to:
Put them at 1v DC below the rated voltage. [Margin for error w/o going over.]
Put them at 120 mVpp Ripple. [Max allowed by ATX spec.]
And keep them as hot as possible without going over 105C.

Caps rated for 2000 hrs Endurance should start going bad not too long after 2000 hrs.
            That's only 83.3 days.

Using a PC as a testbed might be more fun but it could take 5-10 years.

Any thought about a showdown 2.0, TC?

What for? None of these caps are being produced anymore. Only interesting stuff will be to learn if upgrading to polymers helped CrapXons and similar brands to hold ast least as much as quality lytics did. This is very important question now as they put them into power supplies.
