    Unidentified Capacitor

    Hi Guys,

    I am an electronics tech repairing power supply and other elex devices. It happened that I repaired 1 lambda power supply and found 1 capacitor burnt. I compared it with 1 good unit and was able to get the top marking of it. But the problem is, I cannot find any information/datasheet of the said capacitor online. I tried to source and ask electronic store online like digikey but all got negative response as they cannot find any info about it also. I tried to measure the good cap from other unit and it measures 220nF on board. The top marking is AVX CDM-22-0169744A. I hope you guys can give any info/suggestions on what capacitor should I use to replace this. Thank you in advance!

    Re: Unidentified Capacitor

    most likely CDM-22-016 is the part number and the last line is the date it was made.
    given your checking of the other one, it may even be:

    CDM = range
    .22 = capacitance
    .016 = voltage (160v??)

      Re: Unidentified Capacitor

      Hi Stj! Thank you very much for the idea. Having said that, do you think i can use any ordinary ceramic capacitor to replace this one? It seems that this cap got special characteristic because the packaging type (8-pin DIP package) is not same with any ordinary caps. Though i don't have any datasheet to confirm. Hope to hear from you again. Thanks in advance!

        ordinary?

        this is just big.

          Re: Unidentified Capacitor

          What part of the circuit is it located?
          That might be either an old number or custom part number.
          You say the value you measured is .220 µf correct?

          If you can't find a replacement, try contacting AVX, they likely have a direct replacement

            Re: Unidentified Capacitor

            It could just be a very low esr capacitor that is used in the output of the power supply, I see they will use these stacked mlcc types in place of large electrolytics

                Hi RJ,

                Kindly see the actual photo of the pcb circuit. Yes, I will try to contact AVX about this. Its 220nF so by conversion its 0.22uF. Thank you very much for the suggestions.

                  I suspect it is the high voltage type.

                      Lambda??

                      what is this? maybe we can find a schematic.

                            Someone was looking for the same part but a different power supply a few years ago (HAL-02-655), I suspect the number is lambda's own number on that part.

                                  If you don't here from AVX, try TDK-Lambda, they might be able to supply the part.
                                  Here is the other picture I found, same numbers except the last which I suspect is the date/mfg. code.

                                      yes, good photo.

                                      last line on the cap: 9726A < 26th week of 1997??
                                      printed on the pcb: 3197 < 31st week of 1997??

                                      dennis cap is 9744A and the pcb is 9825.

                                      i am now 100% sure i was right.
                                      the capacitance, possibly the voltage, then the mfr date.

                                        hi stj, thanks for your idea..anyway I tried to buy the mlcc cap with 220nF/630V rating because I cannot find the exact part online.. I will inform u guys later whether pass or fail after I install the part and do the testing.
