Looking for yet another tacticle SMD switch

After previous sucessfull search (the MP3 is back in operation…well, after resoldering the switch 3 times it almost does not hold in there while being pushed hard), I am looking for another SMD switch, this time for Point of View tablet. Check images for reference.

The problem is, it measures aprox. 11 (12 with the metal plate) x 2.3 x 3.7 mm (W x D x H) and is right-angled. I have not seen anything like that, there are tons of 6mm switches everywhere.

I may be able to use switch which has contacts aprox. 4 mm far, but those through-hole plastic pins (which help to hold in in place) are aprox. 2.5 mm far. Any idea?

it looks like it can take a throughhole version - how about a topdown foto?

Through hole? How? That won't hold for long.

Why not? Through hole has greater mechanical strength than surface mount.

Indeed, A through hole will actually be stronger.

Though... You are saying it is not strong enough.... Now unless the pads are lifting then it is the soldering joint that is failing... This is a fault with your soldering not the switch

It has only two contacts, I doubt it will be better than four solder tabs. Besides, it may tear off a layer of the PCB itself.

Anyway, owner took the tablet away that it's not worth looking for the switch so I don't need it anymore…but if someone runs into these switches, post it here, may be good for next time.

newtothis: yeah I soldered it better the third time, hopefully. But it is design flaw anyway, that particular switch in that MP3 gets toren off way too often. IIRC, this MP3 has been RMA'd with this problem two times while still under warranty and than I got it some time later with bad navigation switch, too. It'S in stupid place right next to a connector so you cannot even solder in there properly.

Take it the tracks didn't flow through to the underside of the board then?

I take it you were using an iron to solder them?

there arent 2 through-holes in that photo, there are 4.

There are 2 plus one from a track.

Had a bit of time to kill, but it didn't take more than a minute or two to find this:
                    https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...e0f642db9f.pdf
                    http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/...52boN6ltMN0%3d

If possible, I would probably put some sort of thing behind the switch (glue it on) to give it more strength.

I have no idea what stj is trying to say either.

Anyway, those switches you found are too small, the original ones are 11-12 mm, yours are only 6,9 mm. I already stated there are shitloads of 6mm switches, but I have found nothing as wide as 12 mm.
