    An ultrafast rechargeable aluminium-ion battery

If it is true, that will be one of a great break through in batteries development.

Charging time of one minute, 98% efficient, flexible, 7,500 cycle life
It looks really promising. "The electrolyte is basically a salt that's liquid at room temperature, so it's very safe"

"Currently, one of the prototype battery's biggest shortcomings is its voltage. Although Dai points out it is more than anyone else has achieved with aluminum, the battery only generates around two volts of electricity, which is around half that of a typical lithium-ion battery. However, the researchers are confident they can improve on this. http://www.gizmag.com/aluminum-ion-b...tanford/36936/

"Rechargeable aluminium-based batteries offer the possibilities of low cost and low flammability, together with three-electron-redox properties leading to high capacity3"

"The battery operates through the electrochemical deposition and dissolution of aluminium at the anode, and intercalation/de-intercalation of chloroaluminate anions in the graphite, using a non-flammable ionic liquid electrolyte. "

in 15 years we might see these.

Re: An ultrafast rechargeable aluminium-ion battery

You're right, usually these kind of articles are PR for researchers to get more grants and funding.

Get this quote from Thomas Edison:
"The storage battery is, in my opinion, a catchpenny, a sensation, a mechanism for swindling the public by stock companies. The storage battery is one of those peculiar things which appeals to the imagination, and no more perfect thing could be desired by stock swindlers than that very selfsame thing. … Just as soon as a man gets working on the secondary battery it brings out his latent capacity for lying."

Lithium Ion batteries are ~30 years old. First papers on lithium ion batteries were published in 1980, commercialized by Sony in 1991.
So we need around 10 years?

I think with these, they might come a bit sooner than 10 years. There's a high demand for something a bit greener. With lithium ions, maybe there wasn't such a demand back in the 80's? I don't really remember much from then, I was born in 81. I was just thinking maybe perhaps back then, technology wasn't advancing as quick as it is today. Just a thought.

Toshiba is selling a new battery now, i think it's LiTi (Lithium-Titanium)
massive cycle life and the ability to constantly charge & discharge it without damage.
they are marketting it for solar storage.

It has been around since 2011:http://www.greencarcongress.com/2011...-20111117.html
I wonder beside Honda, who else is using it. It sounds very good based on the spec.
"The SCiB charges in about half the time of a typical Li-ion battery, Toshiba says. An SCiB 20Ah cell charged with an 80Ah current will reach 80% of capacity in 15 minutes and 95% in an additional 3 minutes" I never hear Honda claiming about quick charge either.
