Macbook A1932 Intermittent Backlight Issue 820-01521

    Namaste,
We have a Macbook Air A2337 that came in for repair , it was drawing 5v with 0.00 -0.01 amps. Went through a couple of guides and figured that it was a DFU issue. Revived the Macbook and it then worked like a charm for 15 days.

Now it has developed a new problem i.e Intermittent Backlight Failure. Suddenly the Backlight fails and screen goes blank but the laptop is on (checked by playing Music - the laptop screen is blank but the music control respond). Once we close the lid and open it back again, the screen is back on as it was.
The issue happens very randomly, no fixed pattern. Sometimes it will not happen the entire day but then sometimes it will happen every hour.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hall sensor issue maybe? Check for corrosion and continuity around that area, and make sure the hall sensor is working as it should by bringing a magnet close to the sensor

Hi, can you tell me exactly where to check on the board. There is no corrosion on the board .
Also if you feel its a magnet issue then woudn't it go into a sleep mode and the music should stop?

I don't know the layout of this specific model's board, but use a paperclip or other small metal object on the edges of the screen to find where the the magnet is located, then the hall sensor will be in the corresponding position on the logic board.

That depends on how the seonsor fails.

Are you sure its just a backlight issue? Have you confirmed you actually have image? Tried external monitor?

Locate RR203 and review the voltage of this signal, RR203 (pin # 2) IPD_LID_OPEN_1V8.

What is the voltage with the LID OPEN ? with LID CLOSED ?

I believe that the LID sensors are commonly in the trackpad.

On the display, with extreme care, measure the voltages for the power rails used for the LCD & camera.

            Post each measurement.

              Hey Mon2,
My apologies here, i quoted the wrong board number. the correct board number is A1932 i.e 820-01521. Please tell me where to check on this board.

                  See attached.

Check your trackpad. Remove it for testing. See if that allows for your display to function.

                  Check the voltage of IPD_LID_OPEN.

Hey! Have disconnected the trackpad and kept under observation. Letting you know.

                    2 Quick observations :
1.If we just take out the motherboard and put it back it works okay for a few hours before developing the problem.9Happened twice)
                    2. Secondly when we re-assemble the device, it doesnt switch on automatically or by pressing the p[ower button, we have to first put it on charge and then press the power button to switch it on.

                    Just thought of sharing.

                      Update :
We disconnected trackpad and keyboard flex and used a Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard and it worked well the entire day. Just to cross check i put the trackpad flex back on. It is working fine now since 1 hour but they trackpad isn't vibrating or making the clicking sound.

For most/all (not sure exactly) USB-C Macs, once you disconnect the battery and flex cable for the battery, you will need to connect to a USB C charger for it to turn on again. Then it will function as normal and work on battery. so this part is normal

After removing the trackpad it run well for 1 day and then again started giving problem. This is what happens everytime when we do something, remove a flex etc. it runs well for 1 day.

                          Voltage of IPD_LID_OPEN checked a C6712 Point 1 is 1.8v.

Please help further. Should we put in a replacement trackpad and check?

When the screen goes black - when your issue occurs. Check this voltage again.

I am in a split here. The Cap is on the flip side so to check voltage we have to take the board out . Once we open the board the issue is resolved for sometime.
Alternatively if we keep the screen on the bunch and connect the Board externally then wont be able to connect other parts.

Check if this same signal is available on the logic board side that is visible so you can measure it.

IPL_LID_OPEN isn't available on the visible side when everything is connected.

Are you able to probe the pads @ J6700 connector ?

The J6700 connector also contains the signals of interest.
