I know the article says its a leaked tantalum but looks to me like its just yellow glue gone conductive disease.

dont think so, the glue on the top of the caps is light coloured and not translucent.
it does look like an electrolyte leak.

Perhaps it was corrosive solder flux.

It could be flux however it appears to be concentrated around the caps. If it was flux I think it would be likely to show up in other areas of the board. Perhaps it was a flux reaction with the black sticky pads under them? Either way it doesn't look good.
