    Sony KDL-60W630B Issues! Please Help!

Hello to all, So my very nice Sony Bravia KDL-60W630B went on the fritz back in June. I've read and read and here is what I have come up with. When if first started to give me problems, I could power on the TV and get a quick 2-3 second glimpse of some image and text on the screen, then the screen would go black and the Red LED on the TV would blink 8 times continuously. First and foremost, I tried a hard and a factory reset, but had no luck with either. Continuing, I bought and replaced the power supply on the TV thinking that could be the issue, but same old thing happened. After the power supply board, I replaced the main board. After this board replacement, when I pushed power, the LED lights would blink from Orange to Red, indicating a needed software update for the new Main Board. Therefore, I downloaded the latest firmware update from Sony onto a thumbdrive, turned the tv on, inserted the drive into a USB, and waited for approximately 40 min. At this point the TV was just powered off. I removed the USB, unplugged the TV for a few minutes, then plugged it back in, and when I hit power, the SONY logo appeared for 2-3 seconds, then screen went black, and now the Red LED is flashing 6 times. I really don't know what to do next. Is there anyone out there that might be able to help me trouble shoot this thing before I end up throwing it out my second floor window onto the street...just kidding.,,but I really would be very greatful if anyone can share a possible fix and or troubleshoot with me. I have a nice multimeter and soldering tools, I'm just not very well informed on testing circuits. Any and all help is welcome and appreciated. Hope to hear from someone more tech savy than I am very soon! Cheers! JDBird

You can start by providing good clear pictures of the whole back side of the TV showing all the board so we can see what we are dealing with.

disconnect the tcon to panel cables, one at a time and see if anything changes.

If you don't already have it, I attached the service manual. According to the service manual, the red LED flashing 6x is a backlight failure. This seems obvious from the symptoms, though.

When the TV is first powered on, I get a clear picture of the SONY logo across the screen for a few seconds... If the backlights have failed, this image wouldn't be able to show up, would it? I'll try unplugging the TCON and see what happens.

              Sony 1-474-586-12 GL2 Power Supply
              https://www.shopjimmy.com/sony-1-474...gl2-board.htm#
The TV has one boost converter circuit and 4 LED drivers for four LED strings, so if one of the string is bad it will cause the backlights to go into shutdown, or if it detect problem in the LED power supply/driver cicuit, it will also go into shutdown.
              1) TV OFF, meter set to 200VDC scale, keep black probe on the chassis, put red probe on connector CN6801 '+OUT 1' pin turn on the TV while watching the meter to see how high the Voltage goes up to and wait 5 seconds to see how low it goes down to, record the result. Turn TV OFF.
              2) Move red probe to CN6802 '- OUT 1' pin the turn the TV on while watching the meter to see how high the Voltage goes up to and wait 5 seconds to see how low it goes down to, record the reading.
              3) Do the same test on '- OUT 2', '-OUT 3', '- OUT 4'. Report the reading. The test will tell us the condition of all 4 LED circuits.
So you will be turning the TV on and off for each test, it is important that you follow the instruction to get correct DATA.

So I apologize for the very delayed response, but I finally got around to measuring the voltage on CN6802 and CN6801...on the lower CN6802, each pin (1-4) hovered around 5-8V before powering on, when powered on each shot to 15v for a second and then went back down. On CN6801 pins 1-3 hovered from 3-5V, then shot up to 10V when powered on, then went back down. Pins 4 and 5 both measured 0V. I Hope this might help someone in helping me identify the problem. I look forward to any suggestions and/or advice. THNX

You need to redo your test because:
CN6801 has FOUR pins, all four pins are all connected together, you report reading of 5 pins..
CN6802 has FIVE pins (pin 5 is not used.
I expect the Voltage on all pins of CN6801 to be much higher than 5 ~ 8, I expect 24V or more. Is the meter set and it works correctly?
What is the Voltage rating as printed on cap C6804, C6801?
What did you use for meter GND?

BTW, you should also put all original board back in and retest because you were at least get the backlights to come on for 2 ~ 3 seconds per your post 1 which means the Voltage at CN6801 must have been high enough for the LED's to come on.
Also see if you still get the same blink code as before with the original boards in place.

Ok I will try it out again. I just reversed those listings CN6801 pins all went up to 15V and CN6802 pins 1-3 went up to 10V. I will retest. I was using a screw as a ground. Would it be better to use pin 5 on CN6802 as a ground?

                      Gnd point is fine.
Put old boards back in because at least you were getting backlights to come on for seconds, you are only getting 15V so no way the backlights will even flash on at this point.

Ok, I retested and I think these results are a little more plausible.
I started off testing each pin with tv powered off, then applied power and here are recorded results.
Stndby....Powered On... drops back down to
                        CN6801 #1 88V topped out 147V...45..21..3
                        #2 88V topped out 147V...50..25...3.3
                        #3 84V topped out 149V...50..30.13..3
                        #4 86V topped out 150V...40..20..3.3

                        CN6802 #1 54V topped out 107V..60..30..5..0
                        #2 45V topped out 103V..60..20..3..0
                        #3 63V topped out 115V..50..25..5..0
                        #4 0V no change
                        #5 0V no change
I checked and rechecked and there were no volts present on CN6802 pin 4 in standby or when powered on. Also you asked for voltage rating on C6804 & C6801...I can't located these points.

OK, that is more like it.
Connector CN6801 (+ Out 1 ~ 4) all 4 pins are tied together and fed by the Boosted Voltage from the LED power supply, the feeding Voltage to Voltage booster circuit is 88V, that Voltage is boosted up to 150V to feed all 4 Anode pin of the 4 LED strings. So the booster circuit is fine.

Connector CN6802 (pin 5 is not used) is for Cathode (- Out 1 ~ 4) return (through PWM Controlled MOSFET Q6802 ~6805 nad currenst sensing resistors to circuit GND. for maintaining constant current through the LED strings) for the 4 LED strings. So at this point LED string #4 has open circuit (may be due to open wire, open LED, or open connector) because you are getting 0V on the -Out 4 Cathode return line.

                                    1) It can be bad connector on the LED strip.
                                    2) wire to the strip may have gone open circuit.
                                    3) It can be LED burnt out and gone open circuit.

You will have to take that 60" LCD panel a part to get to the LED strips to inspect them, not going to be easy.

I think I'm just gona sell the boards on Ebay and call it a day...I don't have the time or expertise to get down to the LED strips.

I really appreciate the guidance. I wish it hadn't been the LED's, I was really hoping to fix this thing. Maybe on the next one it might be easier. THNX again!
