    Can I use AM2+ CPU on AM3 socket ?

    No, they support different cpu's and memory.

      Amd Cpus are very tolerant regarding different sockets ..Many Amd Cpus for AM3 socket can be used on AM2+ . The last one i did was a Phenom 2 on Am2+ , but they will show less performance of what are they supposed to show , because they cannot benefit from their equipped special extensions and features .
      Best way usually to confirm this tolerance is to download the board manual and compare what Cpus can usually take..

        can I use AM2 CPU on AM3 ? I have Athlon 64 x2 3800 but the motherboard is AM3...
        I don't have AM3 processor for a test...

          Re: AM2+ and AM3 socket ?

          If the motherboard supports DDR2 memory then yes. If the motherboard uses DDR3 then it won't work. AM2 and AM3 processors are pin compatible, but AM2/AM2+ processors only support DDR2 memory because the memory controller is on the cpu.

          For future reference
          AM2/AM2+ = DDR2 only
          AM3 = DDR2/DDR3
          AM3+ = DDR3 only

              https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4...pecifications/

              looks like I'm gonna need AM3 and DDR3 only...
