Sony KDL 40v5810 - No picture, no backlight, no sound; relay clicks, green LED

    Hi

I acquired this television in this state; I have no remote but the green LED responds when the buttons on the set are pressed.

I've had a look around - nothing specific to this model but a few instances of this or a very similar problem, likely attributable to the main board? Maybe.

Post #4 of this thread: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=36285 suggests a possible firmware fix (which seems like a long shot but would obviously be nice) but I haven't been able to find anything more about this.

The question is, should I even bother trying?! Opinions?

    Thanks

Iwould be inclined to pm Dang and ask if you sent him a memory stick does he still have the firmware and would he put it on the stick and send it back.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

I took your advice and contacted "Dang". He HAD retained the recovery software and, fortunately, I have a suitable memory stick.

...and it worked! I'm flabbergasted but obviously pleased. Let's hope it lasts. Now I just need to acquire a remote control.

While I have the back off, might it be worth replacing the power supply capacitors? Leave well-enough alone?

      Another win for this forum!

Hi, I'm more than willing to upload the software with instructions on how to use it, problem is it comes as two files types and one is not recognized for some reason and so can't be uploaded.

Warning: it has to be said and from what I understand of this software, it is specifically for the model first stated in this thread and at the screen size stated, if used in any other model or screen size then other issues may/will arise.

So I'm more than willing to upload it if some one can help??, it's a .tar file, specifically nvm.AEP.tar, thanks.

Glad it's working Greeno, the one I fixed is still working fine, I ended up selling it to a neighbour.

It may not be firmware problem, you should start a new thread for your TV.

                  Hi Dang
If you compress both files as a .rar or .zip then they should upload (up to
19mb) then when they are needed they can be downloaded and decompressed. Thanks for helping out

OK, I hope I've done it right, as stated above, only for the Sony KDS-40V5810 unless you know how to alter it.

These are the instructions that were given to me:

Software Recovery Tool for BA Board 111A
                    SYMPTOM
No picture may appear, while the green LED is on.
                    CAUSE
Damaged NVM data on BA board.
                    SOLUTION
Recover the TV set by applying the Software Recovering Tool using a Memory Stick.
                    1. Preparation – Memory Stick Requirements
                    • Remove unnecessary files from the MS before copying data.
                    • Use a Memory Stick formatter to format. Windows formatters are not supported.
                    • A format program can be downloaded from:
                    http://support.sony-europe.com/memst...n&f=MSFRM#disc
                    • It is, however, recommended to use a Digital camera to format!
                    • After formatting, the content in the MS is just a “Memstick.ind” file.
                    • The flash size must be 16 MB or more.
                    2. Recovery procedure
2-1. In the Memory Stick, create a folder “eg2l_dvt” containing a subfolder “swupdate”.
2-2. Download the attached zip file, including the software recovery tool (RAM file) and NVM data (TAR file), attached to this Technical Bulletin.
2-3. Copy the RAM file in the “eg2l_dvt/swupdate” folder.
2-4. Copy the TAR file into root directory of the Memory Stick. The MS root folder should look as below (Make sure
that ‘Show hidden files and folders’ is activated in the Explorer Options).
2-5. Power off the set and unplug the AC cord.
2-6. Insert the Memory Stick into the erroneous BA board and turn on the TV.
2-7. Wait for about 30 seconds until “Initial setup” is shown. If you can see the EMMA log, wait until the EMMA
                    application is launched.
                    2-8. Turn off the TV.
                    IMPORTANT
After the recovery process, the TV can go in Error mode, i.e. LED changing from green to Red blinking 14
times (T-Con error) – due to generic NVM data not matching to current set size. Therefore, make sure to
                    write the correct NVM version.
2-9. Follow the BA board replacement procedure as described in TB 09TV097. Although the BA board does not
have to be replaced for this issue, it assures correct settings and memory values for each model.
2-10. Update to software package #1.700 or higher, using the software attached to TB 09TV093.
2-11. Check the MAC Address value in Menu => Settings => Network settings => Network.
NOTE: If the MAC address is empty (6 times “00”), this board cannot be used and must be returned for central
                    repair.

Hi. Two years later this thread just helped me out. Just for reference, The files and method above brought a KDL32W5810 back to life. Same fault. Solid green LED and nothing else. I picked the set up for a tenner and thought what the hell. If it updates with the wrong panel info I've not lost much. Big smile when it restarted with initial setup screen. Thanks muchly to all concerned.

Hi, Several years later on from posts above I discovered same problem with my Sony KDL 40v5810 TV. Downloaded files and followed instructions from Dang (thank you so much)....used a sony camera to format memory stick. Was expecting the tv to 'boot' from the memory stick when switched on but nothing is happening ....it doesn't appear to be recognising that the mem stick is there.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong please?
Btw I don't see the MSTK_PRO.IND file as indicated in 2-4 of the instrutions, but assuming that's because I'm not using a 'PRO' memory stick? Do I *have* to?
SO disappointed with Sony for withdrawing support on this....the hardware is as 'good as new' (TV repair man has told me all the components are working fine) but looking like I might have to dump the entire tv because I can't get a fix for a little bit of software...unless some superhero out there can help me out ;-)

Try an older usb stick, try to use one with 4gb or less, follow the instructions on their site, try to do it exactly as directed.

It will not work if you have a Pro as I have tried before (these sticks are too fast , don't bother getting an adaptor as also will not work. The reason you are not seeing MSTK_PRO.IND is that you will need to enable viewing of system files (which is normally hidden in Windows) so that you do not tamper or delete them for obvious reasons!

Many thanks for responses....good to know that there are at least two superheros out there ;-)
The memory stick (well it's a 'card' rather than a stick) was newly bought so that suggests it is a PRO maybe? I will attempt to unhide the system files to check...if it is, then evidently that is likely to be the issue (and it being shown in the instructions is actually rather unhelpful!).
If it isn't I'll attempt to obtain an older card ....but because it needs to be a sony mem card in order to fit in a sony digital camera for formatting (I've tried using a multi card reader - it doesn't work), I'm thinking that's going to be tricky.
Will post to say if gets fixed. Thanks again.

To do this, you need a special utility to format the memory stick from sony. Try.

This is the type of memory stick you require. I don't think they did anything larger than a 128MB in this style. Using anything else will not work if it is larger than a 128MB!
I have tried and only managed to do it when I saw a cheap Sony camera with memory sticks which I keep for this type of situation! I have a a 128MB, 64MB and a 16MB!
