Hard drives with oxidized HDA contacts

Was reading the thread "<plays taps> 500GB bites the dust..."
There it was mentioned that oxidation of the HDA contacts on the PCB is a common mode of failure on modern hard drives.
As I had never heard of this before I went through my pile of dead drives.
They have already had all data recovered and are just in storage before being destroyed permanently as I don't want to risk customers data being adrift...

One drive in particular stood out, a Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB model HD103UJ
But there where more drives like a HD501LJ and several Western Digital drives with the same issue too.

This Spinpoint F1 was decommissioned because it was racking up on bad sectors, it was up to 30MB at this point, I even posted about it in the hard drive failure thread.
When I tried running Samsung ESTOOL on it back in 2011 it stopped with a message asking to RMA the drive if it was within warranty due to bad sectors.

As you can see from the above the oxidation was really bad.
I cleaned it with a rubber and then some IPA.
After this ESTOOL passes, only complaining about bad sectors in one area of the drive.
I ran HDD Scan after this, and there are some drops in speed.
I'm thinking this is where the drive has reallocated sectors.
So the drive has to seek while doing the sequential test, thus creating those spikes...
So it would be interesting to delete the drives list of reallocated sectors and then make a new scan, but I don't know how to do that.

I also went through my box of decommissioned drives not due to problems but old age.
It's all the same here, extreme oxidation on pretty much all "modern" SATA drives.
But my old SCSI and IDE drives are fine because they where not victim of the RoHS directive!

i wonder if anything can be done to it to prevent it from corroding again? looks like time for some very smarty-pants ghetto modding... searched for a couple of ideas from wikipedia like galvanization and anti-corrosion methods. im no metallurgist but perhaps some ideas for ghetto modding the contacts can be found.

had a customer come to me in sheer panic.a 1tb wd blue with 600gb of irreplaceable data not spinning up.yep it was corroded pads.from the smell it had they must chain smoke over it.cleaned it up and cloned perfectly to a new drive.
and they now know the value of a good backup!
i wiped with deoxit for good measure.

How much "erasing" did it take to clean them that much?
The oxidation on my board just wouldn't budge...

I had a WD like that... A green line so i didn't have much hope, but i tried anyway.... Tin the pads. Use Good flux like Rubyfluid. After i did a SMART test, cleared the reallocated sector table, then zero'd the drive and ran a SMART test again, it came back with only 3 bad sectors. It only took 5 years to run the SMART tests too! Damn greens.

Telling by the gouges in the mask of the headstack interface pads, he used one of those abrasive arse pink erasers on the back of a pencil.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

Thanks, I didn't know about the /B switch to chkdsk.
The one included in Server 2003 does not have it so guess I have to find a more modern machine to test on

On the 5 drives I've tried so far the oxidation has come off very easily.
Only like 10 "wipes" back and forth or so with the rubber eraser from a lead pencil...

How did you clear the reallocated sector table?
It's the main question of my thread after all.

i don't know how to delete the reallocated sector table but i can tell you that a tool called ''hdd regenerator'' might help you to repair them or move them to defective list and put the spare ones in their place i successfully repaired one 500gb seagate laptop drive that was reporting bad sectors and it works great now in my playstation 3 also you might have to pirate it because it's a paid tool

Here is a more elaborate one in linux. I think it must be the same type of procedure with any hard drive.

Here is a explanation of Fdisk from old.

Re: Hard drives with oxidized HDA contacts

Looked further at this now, the 30MB bad sectors where only what Windows had allocated in the NTFS metadata file $BadClus
I ran checkdisk with the /B switch "Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume"
It successfully recovered all sectors that it had marked as bad!
If you look in my first post the "Reallocated Sectors Count" is actually at 0.
It's not accurate though because further down is "Current Pending Sectors Count" at 3.
This has now turned to 0 after testing the drive but the "Reallocated Sectors Count" remains at 0 as well, so I think this is being hidden by the drive.
Here is the current lowdown, first after running a normal chkdsk /R last week from a Win2K3 install followed by chkdsk /B right now on a Win8 install.
And the resulting SMART attributes after that had completed.
                          Code:
                          >chkdsk /R I:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)...
                          221696 file records processed.
                          File verification completed.

Really it depends on the firmware of the drive that it will clear reallocated sectors in SMART. I've seen some drives that seem to dynamically reallocate sectors and some, when a sector is remapped, will never use that sector again.

The bad clusters seen by the OS is tracked by the OS and can easily be cleared, that's something completely different.

So here you are talking about the flash drive with-in the hard drive as oppose the the actual hard drive disk? Or are you talking about an actual space on the hard drive dedicated for the firmware on the hard drive? Because beyond that I would think the rest of the hard drive could be cleared.

I've had bad sectors removed from SMART after using Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows tool (works with other drives not only WD) : https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?lang=en

I've used the zero fill option which zeroes out each sector on the drive so you lose everything including partition definitions, so save data first. After filling all with zeroes and rebooting, smart info got updated and showed fewer sectors and the drive actually worked better.

Yes, the recent WDs I've seen it been able to clear out SMART errors after clearing sectors. However I don't recall seeing this behavior on Hitachi/IBM SMART.

Had the same issue with one of my WD Drives recently. It was a 640GB Blue one that just didn't want to start...

The connectors did indeed seem suspicios...
