How on earth did this happen??

This was a cap I bought on ebay from PC Motherboard Capacitors Store. It is a panny FJ, and is brand new, with exactly 0 hrs use. However, as you can see in the picture, its bulging and leaking. Do you think it is fake? If you want more pictures of another FJ from the same supplier see https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...43&postcount=7

It could be fake, because it's not look like pictures from yanz in this post ==> https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...04&postcount=8

    Your's "6.3 V", yanz's "16 v" (v is smaller than Voltage rating number)

    Just guess.

OK, Won't be using them anymore. I'll just use either Ruby/Samxon from Topcat or Nichicon from mouser

I only put bad caps in the fire if they're not yet leaking. This will just go in the bin.

Re: How on earth did this happen??

Whenever I want to explode cheap caps I just put on a welding coat, face mask, and welding gloves (to avoid being sprayed by hot electrolyte) strip the label off of it, and press the tip of my hakko to the side of it. 599C makes them blow pretty quick. CEC's seem to 'splode every time, only could get a teapo to go sometimes, same with asia-x. Strangely enough, I could get those BH caps to go every time, but it would take upwards of 20 seconds. They were very wet when I opened a new one up, it was pretty soaked. Maybe thicker than normal aluminum or a really thinly stamped vent.

I'm curious about this too I use Panasonic exclusively in low ESR applications.

This is why I only order from official Panasonic distributors so I know I'm getting legit stuff sure you get a better deal from third parties but getting fakes is the risk you take. Risk vs reward strikes again.

A soldering iron to blow bad caps up nice. I clip them to the output of a variac and crank up the AC until they pop .

Wow. That's scary. It certainly -looks- authentic. Do you have more with same datecode?

I wonder what Panasonic would have to say if you sent it to them?

Hmm, I wonder why it failed. The others in that order all -look- fine. I hope they are genuine as I have used them on a few motherboards so far (used them to replace the busted caps in my avatar).

As for the datecodes, they are all similar. The date code on the busted one is 6OIVRP
None of my other Panny FJ caps have the exact same datecode (assuming that it was the faint writing on the first pic of my last post), although they are all formatted in a similar way (Begin with 6O or 69, then a roman numeral, ends with two letters).

As for the size of that V for voltage, some of my panny FC and FM ordered from another place (RS Components) have the capital V. Surely, RS wouldn't be selling fake FC and FM would they?? I'd say its just a normal variation in manufacturing, just like the size of any other text on them.

It's rare but once in a while a cap gets built with the polarity marked backwards on the cap.

The busted cap is brand new and was not used/installed at all.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

you mean it was not used BY YOU?
you don't really know what happened to that cap before it reached you.

also, if it's just one in 100, it's just freak accident...or somebody trying to sell a cap that he put backwards...
