Re: Interesting new Australian law regarding PSUs

Quite possibly because the big-name PC manufacturer tells them not to, or because they think it's dangerous to open up the PC case.

Re: Interesting new Australian law regarding PSUs

I know many high-end PSUs already have such warranties. The key word here is require.

Can't think of any excuse for one to fail in a shorter time.

Re: Interesting new Australian law regarding PSUs

I have another idea: Would it be feasible to require a minimum 5-year warranty on PSUs???

Re: Old HDD discussion

Correct.

Head assembly still uses ball bearings. Fluid-dynamic bearings can only sustain rotation in one direction and rely on the rotation to circulate the oil.

Re: Old HDD discussion

In fluid-dynamic bearings (used by Seagate drives since the Barracuda ATA IV) there is no solid contact between bearing surfaces in-motion. As I remember, FDBs contain an oil circulated by the...

Re: Your favourite PSU OEM

That's not the nominal power dissipation, it's the maximum safe power dissipation at a case temperature of 25C. So a higher number is better.

I'd attribute the survival of the Hipro to the bigger...

Re: Old HDD discussion

What's more, a set of tests I just did in HDTune shows that if you short-stroke the ST3120026A to 37GB, it only falls short of the WD360GD-00FLA1 by about 1ms. So I can only say 3 words about that...

Re: Old HDD discussion

I'm guessing your main drive is either an ST3160813AS (7200.11) or ST3160318AS (7200.12).

The ST-157A is indeed a 3-platter drive, according to the Seagate Desk Reference. There's also a 2-platter...

Re: Up to 10,000RPM

One word: Understatement.

Sure the ST3120026A is not the quietest drive ever but it's far, far quieter than that Raptor is when seeking. The WD800JD-00LSA0 (which should actually be called a...

Re: possible delta fire hazard.

Looks like anti-static foam. Some fool must have added it, as I really doubt any manufacturer would be that stupid.

Re: What is RoHS?

It would probably be best if people stopped thinking of "toxic" and "non-toxic" substances. Anything can have ill effects with bad enough overexposure. Yes, even oxygen, green freaks. :D

Re: What is RoHS?

Keep in mind also how heavily lead was used before they realised its toxicity. Silver being a precious metal, it's understandable why it doesn't get as much bad press.

I feel that many things get...

Exclamation Ouch.

This is what I got when I made pixel measurements of the human toxicity potential graph (from the study document itself):

Between each multiple of 10 on the scale is 28 pixels.

The bar for...

Re: What is RoHS?

I think I may have the answer as to why they put lead on the RoHS list without thinking it through.

Stress.

It doesn't really need to be said again that stress is the #1 cause of mistakes....

Re: Fake primary capacitors

The Fuhjyyu is actually within tolerance (barely...), so it isn't necessarily fraudulently labelled.

Re: Old HDD discussion

As it happens, I have another ST340014A with a broken ceramic capacitor (the rest of the board seems okay). Measuring that position on the ST380011A showed it to be +3.3V. My plan in mind is to take...

Re: The aftermath

Scratch that. The pending and uncorrectable counts are up to 90 and the reallocations have gone from 26 to 30. The runtime is 39,473 hours. Looks like this one has had it. :(

At least the...
