lower probability of dead caps.
looks like the mfr tried to make a decent unit.
add to the above list of stuff to resolder anything that runs hot....

what model is this?
many older ht's had high power options which were higher voltage packs.
you had say a 7.2v pack that ran at 2w or a 12v that ran around 5w.

cheap smps always litter the hf spectrum with their wandering birdies.
a surprise is that an xbox 360 supply does well for running 100w hf rigs.
they dont like cap charging inrush so connect then...

is the phosphor area of your replacement leds (yellow stuff) round or square?
i found that the ones with a square dont spread into the tir lens correctly and you get hotspots.

2v for a pair of cells is dead anyway.
if you use nicd/nimh it will protect your batts from over discharge/reversal.
i see no point in removing a useful feature.

just a warning about these funai power supplies.
they are "conditionally stable"
any line disturbance can blow them up.
the paralleled diodes on the secondary can break down even if they test...

use 1 protection board rated to handle the load and parallel as many cells as you want to get the needed capacity.
multiple boards in parallel will always have quirks as they are never going to trip...
