Re: Behavior of Faulty IC's

I don't know if that counts, because the actual chip "core" is still good. It's the GPU core separating from the GPU substrate PCB that is going bad.

Re: question about Polymodding

There is no precise guide to this really. It's mostly a rough ballpark.

Generally, this "high" frequency vs. "low" frequency VRM thing is mainly meant to rule out much older motherboards. For...

Re: Older Macintosh Magnetek power supply ressurection

Sounds about right, given the pictures. The 5VSB uses a single-transistor self-oscillating circuit that produces anywhere from 10-20V that then gets regulated by a 7805 linear regulator. This is...

Re: Identifying reason for board's similar caps, but different physical sizes

Exactly!

Sacon is not actually re-badged GSC. It's the same company that makes them. They just changed names several times, because their caps are THAT BAD.

i.e. GSC = Evercon = Sacon
And I...

Re: Asus P5S800-VM no POST

Hard to say for me. I haven't dealt with too many SiS boards. Actually, I think I only have one, and it's a finicky piece of turd socket 462 that I never built anything with it.

So I can't say how...

Re: Behavior of Faulty IC's

I've seen it happen plenty of times. But a lot depends on if the fault was external or not. For example, on PC motherboards damaged by lightning strike, I've seen chips that are either intermittent...

Re: Topcat's 3DFX Voodoo 3500 Revival

I love it!!! Great repair!

And this thread is a good example of why I always keep spare junk PCBs around.

Yup, I can't tell you how many video cards I've received with missing parts - even...

Re: my trannie sister is smoking hot again: gf4 ti card smoked during use due to bad

Unlikely.
Even if the caps have no vents or the vents don't function, the worst that can happen is the cap "can" body will "launch" itself. But even that is rare. Most of the time for a cap that...

Re: my trannie sister is smoking hot again: gf4 ti card smoked during use due to bad

Nice video card there!

Just a shame that it uses garbage caps. But a lot of old hardware does, unfortunately. Still, it might not be dead yet.

The smoke could have come from the caps. They...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Hmmm... this one is from a few weeks back, but I completely forgot about it: NZXT 210 computer case, NIB but opened. It's a $35-ish case (IIRC). Got it for $10. Kind of a cheapo case (in terms of...

Re: DC Power Supply QW-MS605D

Good electrolytic brands? That would be only the following Japanese brands:
- Rubycon
- Nichicon
- Panasonic
- United Chemicon
- Sanyo / Suncon
- Hitachi

Just about everything else is many...

Re: Asus P5S800-VM no POST

I also suggest taking off the stock Intel pushpin heatsink and testing with the heatsink just resting on the CPU. These stock Intel pushpin heatsinks are known to warp boards badly and can sometimes...

Re: XFX 850w blown bridge rectifier.

+100 ^ This!

If you have a blown bridge rectifier, chances are there is something else wrong with the PSU. It could be something as simple as blown MOVS (due to repeated power surges) or because...

Re: Older Macintosh Magnetek power supply ressurection

That's not quite true.
It really depends on the power supply.

Generally, yes, only one optocoupler is needed with UC384x ICs to keep regulation. But if the PSU has "soft off" / standby power...

Re: Identifying reason for board's similar caps, but different physical sizes

That PSU converter board appears to use buck VRM circuits, so I suggest going with low ESR caps.

Thus, I suggest to use the Nichicon HN 16V 1500 uF caps, provided they weren't manufactured between...

Re: Panasonic FC series - leaking? quality gone?

87000 hours is pretty good.
But the leaking from the bottom part is what worries me a bit, as electrolyte can be corrosive and eat away traces. I'd much rather have a cap bulge and stop working that...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Absolutely!

If I can't fix it, I will make sure it finds its way to someone that can.

Hopefully it's just the RAM chip and not ripped pads under the BGA chip. Given the PCB flex it received,...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

^ Not yet.

Haven't found the time to remove the chip (or rather, the good weather, as I use the kitchen stove as my bottom heater, and that tends to stink up the house with "PCB smells", so I only...

Re: Viewsonic vx2252mh

Thank you! That actually helped quite a bit.

Yup, I see it too. Can't tell if it's just a spec of dirt/dust or a chipped off piece... or is it a bubble? If the latter, that ceramic cap...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Not exactly cheap... but one of my latest fairly decent scores is a XFX GeForce 6800 XTreme (XT) 256 MB AGP DDR3. For those of you that know this card or XFX from that era, you know what it comes...

Re: Viewsonic vx2252mh

Hi SolomonMan,

White screen issue typically means either LVDS connection problem or T-con board power supply problem. Since you already more or less eliminated the LVDS connector as the problem,...

Re: Polk Audio PSW350 No Balls

Not sure, as I haven't tried tracing the circuit myself. But I'd trust Budm on that one, so maybe do give it a try. And just to be safe, put a capacitor in series between the sub RCA connector and...

Re: Not Even BCN's Russia Connections Can Top This One - Supermicro S2DGU Build

Not only that, but it also prevents the mouse from scratching/wearing down whatever surface it is rolling on. I've seen desk tops where a mouse was heavily used with no mouse pad, and the finish...

Re: Not Even BCN's Russia Connections Can Top This One - Supermicro S2DGU Build

Well, it all depends on what you are used to, I suppose.
Ball mice - at least good ones - will stop tracking when lifted off a mouse pad (or whatever surface you are rolling them on, but I...
