Re: Overvolting/reversing a polymer cap

Well, I never expected melt, but heat expansion is possible as well as electrochemical activity. Just wondering if the movie presented is typical behavior if subject to improper conditions.

The...

Re: Measuring crystal oscillators with scope ?

I forgot about another category, crystals used as filters, which are not part of oscillator circuits. These are a category of their own.

If both pins of the crystal is connected to a...

Re: Overvolting/reversing a polymer cap

Interesting... so the videos aren't correct or not always typical?
Did the lead fuse or did it actually out gas?
Are you sure you have a real poly? :D

... do we need to open them, sniff them,...

Re: Measuring crystal oscillators with scope ?

Yes, if your oscilloscope has enough bandwidth, the crystal oscillator is powered, you should be able to see the waveform.

However if you have a plain crystal by itself -- not an oscillator --...

Re: The hard drive failure thread

Sometimes I wonder, why we don't go back to software based bad sector mapping... it was the norm years ago.
Then again, what was bad is that the bad blocks were written on the drive itself and you...

Re: Parallel Printer Renaissance?

Did you end up trying a new cartridge or just letting it print smeared down the page?

Re: BENQ mp720 projector

I would still think that it needs to be fairly close, and an even larger problem of having to deal with designing a heatsink to fit. With HIDs usually at least 80W or so, heatsinking can get a bit...

Re: "Save Image As" I always get a 25KB .jpg that is HTML

Works for me (Firefox 60.something ESR, Linux)

Attach the file you got?

Re: BENQ mp720 projector

Wouldn't the LEDs need to be near the same wattage as the original bulb if it where HID? I thought that the efficiency of HID was not that far off from LED.

If they were incandescent/halogen,...

Re: What exactly is the circuit failure mechanism?

Having a capacitor short out is catastrophic failure, and usually due to improper use (reverse voltage, over voltage). More likely they fail to degradation of their characteristics.

It's hard to...

Re: Overvolting/reversing a polymer cap

To be honest, blowing up capacitors is not fun to me. The sole reason for blowing up the caps is to match behavior, assuming similar behavior means similar design. Yeah it's a bit of correlation is...

Re: "Save Image As" I always get a 25KB .jpg that is HTML

might be right clicking in the wrong hotspot or there's some evil html going on there that could tell that you're using a context menu and prohibiting download with the easiest possible save-as...

Re: Directly replacing NiMh cells with Li-Ion cells - bad idea ?

Then there's the irony of reusing lead solder for being eco-friendly :o

Sigh. I wish it were easy to make all the waste solder I have back into wire, I sure would reuse this solder for...

Re: Parallel Printer Renaissance?

I don't think the 4L and 5P aren't much that far apart in age. The 4L is a tiny laser printer though perhaps the newer 1100 has smaller volume, it doesn't look like a laser printer like the 4L. But...

Re: Directly replacing NiMh cells with Li-Ion cells - bad idea ?

I've charged my Kenwood's batteries overnight once by mistake... lucky lucky it didn't blow up as there's no protection circuitry...

Re: Parallel Printer Renaissance?

I have the same problem on my 5P (and incidentally I'm also using a jetdirect with it) and I think it's just an aging toner cartridge, even though the one I have in there now is fairly "new" though...

Re: gas cooker ignition

Ahhhh... okay now I understand.

Yeah I would imagine there first needs to be some sort of isolation from mains to the outputs. That's one isolation.

Then I would imagine there may be a...

Re: gas cooker ignition

not sure what meter readings you're referring to, but there must be duty cycle and current limiting inside the igniter, implying some sort of RC delay of sorts. Unfortunately the igniter is potted...

Re: gas cooker ignition

Probably returning to GND... so does the igniter light all units at the same time regardless if it's needed or not? I guess it should be fine, cars do it all the time...

Darn, already done ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNaVokFOxjo

So all I need to do is abuse it and it better not pop, just short out... :D

Re: Directly replacing NiMh cells with Li-Ion cells - bad idea ?

Alas, even having a BMS board that handles 30A, it doesn't help if the cells themselves can't handle 30A.

Incidentally, if people saw the few posts I made about one of my HTs that someone swapped...

Re: Oscilloscope kits

200KHz (1MSps) is still good enough to deal with audio work.
And perusing the original designer's site, the above post looks like that's a chinese copycat that the original designer is trying to get...

Re: Directly replacing NiMh cells with Li-Ion cells - bad idea ?

Also if he just bought random li-ion cells that aren't rated for high current (which are notably more expensive) it also doesn't work...

Technically if he replaced 3 NiMH cells to one Li-ion cell,...
