Re: Samsung LCD TV has Very Bright Picture - LN40A500T1FXZA

Interesting. One of my Samsungs used to do that for about 1 minute, a few times a week at random. Not quite that bright though.
Hasn't done it for a quite a while now.

Re: Wife's PC killed by virus

If a Windows server is crashing, it's either got a hardware problem, or crap software installed.
I haven't seen a Windows server crash in over 5 years. Last one was when a shitty Symantec product...

I have an RM3000somethingerother in one of my server racks. It sits at the bottom in a constant 18degree C air stream. ...

Re: APC Back-UPS NS 1250

Interestingly, EEVBlog just did a teardown video of a SmartUPS 2200RM (considerably better quality than their cheaper ones)
I have one in a rack that gets nothing higher than 18 degree C air and...

Re: HMMM....What could this be.... ;)

I have 3 or 4 users who work late to 11:30 or so, and 2 that are earlybirds at 6am.
I refuse to do work between midnight and 6 (they don't pay me enough) to someone gets to wait. :)

Re: HMMM....What could this be.... ;)

Yup. Standard procedure for most decent RAID controllers when the battery gets low.
I have a server in my rack at work that needs a new battery (the 1-week power outage killed it) and it's not...

Re: Laptop Upgrades revisited

I'm still partial to the Dell Latitude series. Mainly because that's our standard at work, and I can get 3 year old units for dirt cheap. I know their reliability, and parts can be had easily on...

Re: I think I got a bad Hakko 808

Sorry, not sure I follow you on that one.

Knowing your previous posts on equipment, you probably mean Hakko is a toy and I should only have a $2000.00 Pace station :) :)

Re: I think I got a bad Hakko 808

Got the replacement today. What a difference!
This thing is the cat's ass. Did a quick test-desolder of 2 caps on a monitor pcb I had laying around. It heated up fast, sucked that solder out like...

Re: No screws visible, how to crack open Acer LCD unit?

For most monitors, I remove the stand and any visible screws, then gently pry the front bezel off starting in the middle of one of the sides. Once you get one a clip or 2 loose you can continue the...

Re: what software is used to mark jpg?

Almost any image editor can do it. From Photoshop/Gimp to MS Paint.
If you need a decent free tool to do it, try paint.net

Edit. Dangit, Ben beat me by a few seconds.

Yep. My server is still a Quad 6600 and my desktop is a Core 2 duo 6600.

Re: Why would anyone get a desktop anymore

Holy crap, I have 2 long haired dogs, and I only clean my desktop out every 4 months.
Maybe try cleaning your house once in a while!

As for why desktops? Performance, flexibility (customizing a...

Re: I think I got a bad Hakko 808

So my suspicion was correct. It was returned to Fry's today, and they apologized.

Re: Dell Precision 470

Well, it's not that chip but it may be something in the neighborhood.

Pin 6 measures 1.8 ohms to ground. Pulled the chip, chip measures ok, pin 6 still 1.8ohms to gnd on the board. Pulled the FET...
