Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Three more 48V x 7.2AHr battery packs (for UPSs).

Another 96GB (12x8) of PC10600 DDR3.

A Netra T5220.

And, a dinky little Eee PC that I'm hoping I can use for those times when I need to run...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Another 2x2 display stand -- but I don't think it will support anything bigger than 24 inch monitors. OTOH, I don't like individual Workspaces (NOT to be confused with Desktops) to be much larger...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

They have surprisingly good records of what goes where! (unlike the phone company). OTOH, I doubt there are many changes to the network once its in place (mature neighborhood so the only additional...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Cables have been there for just under 40 years (so, unlikely they were "made in china"). Their original service life was supposed to be 20 years. So, the problem is a lack of maintenance on the...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I'll install optical transceivers.

The wiring in my office is all exposed (hangs from the underside of the work benches) so I can always replace/upgrade it.

The house is all CAT5 (100Mb) --...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

A set of six dual 10Gbe NICs that were headed for the trash still in their original packing!

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Sorry I can't offer to send you one; I've replaced all of my UPSs with units that have network management cards (so I can "talk" to them from any machine, not just the machine to which they are...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I'd recommend the Panasonic batteries (I think that unit uses a pair of the 7.2AHr size) -- they may be a few dollars more.

I suggest disabling the noisemaker (unless you have REALLY stable power...

Re: TV Resolution vs. PC resolution.

I had a job with lots of travel (a few thousand miles per week -- EVERY week) many years ago. My goal was always to get "done" and back home, ASAP. I'd often go to the job site, do whatever needed...

Re: TV Resolution vs. PC resolution.

Tail wagging the dog (you being forced to adapt to what the vendor is supplying).

Annoyingly, there is a fair bit of second-guessing (by the manufacturer) that goes into the design of products: ...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

And finish off the week with two MORE (loaded) 6513's! I'm going to have to scurry to find homes for these as they're just too damn big to keep around! :crying:

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Actually had my proposal approved, today. I'll be able to demonstrate refurbishing ~1000 laptops/annually (at a rate of 20 in 5 hours). So, now I can finish laying out the boards and set up a bench...

Re: TV Resolution vs. PC resolution.

Yes, but that depends on your particular panel and the electronics that are driving it.

If you are getting the "1360 x 768" figure from some literature that accompanied your TV, then this is most...

Re: TV Resolution vs. PC resolution.

720p (widescreen, not "standard 4:3) is nominally 1280 (dots) x 720 (lines) -- the 720 in 720p indicating the number of lines, the p indicating that it is a progressive scan (NOT interlaced)

The...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

A Catalyst 6513 w/ eleven 48x10/100/1000 modules! I'll have to check their specific capabilities (as well as the size of the power supply).

Re: uSD cards (probably applies to other, similar media, as well)

Well, you can do that with any "content". E.g., copy some files to the card; then compare them to the originals.

But, you can only perform that "test" after you've purchased the item.

So,...

Re: uSD cards (probably applies to other, similar media, as well)

Yeah. Unfortunately, there's no way to truly GUARANTEE you're getting The Real Deal.

To date, I've only had one (consumer) flash device fail (a Sandisk thumb drive that suddenly "write protected"...

Re: uSD cards (probably applies to other, similar media, as well)

I think, of necessity, controllers are getting cleverer at monitoring the state of flash cells. With MLC and TLC (and QLC!) technologies, its just too damn easy for data to degrade -- when you're...

Re: uSD cards (probably applies to other, similar media, as well)

Yes, but the read-disturb phenomenon causes new writes to occur (by the FTL) to "salvage" data that is in danger of degrading. As the number of erase/program cycles has a relatively fixed limit,...

Re: 10 hours lost because stupid laptop wouldn't boot! GRRR!

Yes, PLAN AHEAD. Configure your system so that you DON'T HAVE TO SIT AND WATCH IT, regardless of what it MIGHT end up doing.

Gee, I'm at a loss to see how that comment even applies. I'll...

Re: uSD cards (probably applies to other, similar media, as well)

Well, that's where you are likely to perceive the delay in its most "isolated" form. But, it will also affect how quickly objects are loaded/stored from/to the medium.

Presumably, (all of)...

Re: uSD cards (probably applies to other, similar media, as well)

I wouldn't imagine it to be a problem when writing snapshots -- as I would expect the software to simply wait for each block to be written (there is no timeliness constraint involved -- beyond what...
