Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I'd love to buy individual pieces, but I cannot buy much -- I'm trying to free up more space in my house, not less....

...also, this is quite short notice for me. And I would have trouble driving...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I'm sorry, the discs from that TV series are region 1, and I bought all 3 seasons brand new. A true Region 2 DVD disc (Studio Ghibli's "Only Yesterday") gave a different message.

("Only...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Okay, I cleaned both of the lasers and upgraded to the last firmware. It works just fine now (no internal battery). It does not play either type of disc inside a "box" like it did in the Hardware...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I did update the firmware when I got it, and it did work. But I always knew the later Blu-Ray discs would have Java instructions the player could not understand. I just didn't expect the thing to...

Unhappy Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

A few years ago I got a Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-Ray player at a garage sale. Our friend Gabriel Torres over at Hardware Secrets was not impressed, and he was right. This was not a very good unit....

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6

No, I ditched Folding@Home years ago also (got 850,000 points or units or whatever, gave it up). Thought about getting one going again recently, just for fun.

Last time, the CPU client (version...

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6

Impressive. I only wish I had the time to put together such a great build. I was thinking about putting one of my 'Kabini' mini-ITX boards (2.05 GHz 4-core CPU) on a pizza box and plugging in my...

Re: Ratdude's computer workbench... and epic fail build

Let me know if you want to borrow my degaussing tool. It is a Radio Shack hand-held wand-style unit, it only weighs a few ounces. It is good for (and marketed for) removing residual magnetic fields...

Re: Ratdude's computer workbench... and epic fail build

I have a KVM...the convenience is wonderful !

Right now it switches between an i3-3245 HTPC (Mythbuntu 12.04 I think) and my main AMD 8150 system (Win7 / Mint 18.3).

EDIT: I just realized I'm...

Re: The 2019 Operating System Thread

Main system - Windows 7. Mageia and Mint do not like my chipset and/or wireless (970 nothbridge, SB850 south bridge). Mandriva 2010.2 was the "high point" here for Linux, but since then Linux has...

Unhappy Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

My neighbor threw out another computer. The Dell Dimension 4400.

2.2 GHz processor, probably 256 Megs of Ram. It has the heavy "clamshell" case. I damaged it getting it apart, because I really...

Re: Sd card picture recovery

Try GetDataBack from Runtime Software. They have different versions for FAT and NTFS. I have used it to recover .MOV (QuickTime) files off my dash cam's memory card as well as JPEGs from the SD...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I wouldn't use those for door stops. I had people try to sell me speakers from a van once. Just because I was driving with my car windows down, they thought I was a "mark" to get cheated out of my...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

HP Pavilion A305W, Intel board (3 PCI slots, Intel onboard video)
2.7 GHz Celery [Celeron], 256 Megs of 333 MHz...

Smile Re: Your Video Card Cooling Mods

My video card mod is pretty simple, but it works. Here I have the Gigabyte GV-R677SL-1GD. It is the Radeon HD 6770, the 40 nm "Juniper" chipset, completely passive cooled, with 1 GB of DDR5 (VGA,...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

You guys get such good stuff, I'm jealous! But today, I was one of the first 250 customers at the opening of a new grocery store. I got:

Re: Gigabyte GA-970 UD3

Re: Gigabyte GA-970 UD3

Update: Another nearly identical board (UD3 or UD3P) died in November 2017, after only one year of use. (fans didn't come on "extra fast" for the first 2 seconds. No "single beep". Monitor did not...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I may soon be getting a 1979-1981 Honda CM400T for $150. It may run after a bit of work, but the ownership title has been lost (the title might be replaced if certain legal procedures are followed)....

Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

The left side of the motor housing was broken in two (all 360 degrees around), as if the unit had been dropped. Maybe I could have removed the broken part and all the safety guards on the left side...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

A quick search suggests this equipment provides "loudness normalization" and "metadata correction". You can use it in your workflow when producing programming, and also in broadcasting.

You can...

Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

Today I grabbed a cheap 6-inch bench grinder from someone's trash (I did ask permission). It is broken, and can't really be repaired. It is only $39 or $49 for a brand new one, so I'll throw it...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Whoops. I meant to say 500 GIG drive on that E-machines T5010. Sorry. Also, this was not the original drive.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

It seems like I never get the "good finds" like everyone else (except for my wonderful Amazon Echo). Here is more evidence of my bad finds:

Last week my neighbor threw an E-machines T5010 in his...
