Re: Capacitor(s) Identification

The larger blue cap is probably 2.2uF, 100V, either monolythic ceramic or film. If it's a film cap it's probably polyester film.

The other two are both .1uF (10 x 10^4 pF), +/-10% ("K"), film...

Re: Help with capacitor substitution for a DVR

Given that this is a product that users are likely to use in ways that make for poor heat dissipation and, IIRC, MCZ is a 2000-hour rated capacitor, I wonder if the slightly higher impedance of KZE,...

Re: First Timer - Mystery capacitor identification

For some reason, Nichicon likes to put "U" in front of their series names in their catalog. Just ignore; similarly, ignore the "(M)" you frequently see next to the series name on many capacitors....

Re: Capacitor(s) Identification

I've seen older military style mica caps that look like this:

But not in about 50 years.

Re: Capacitor replacement

Boschert used a similar or that very cap for the output capacitor on their HL1500, a 5V, 300A, 1500W switching power supply. I do not know whether Boschert ever brought that model to market, though....

Re: Capacitor replacement

That original cap looks like a super low ESR, very high ripple current type that Sprague and maybe Mallory used to make. The ESR will be less than 10 milliohms, probably less than 5 milliohms.

Re: WFCO Camper Converter need help understanding KA3846 SMPS Controller

Unless you're talking about vacuum tubes, heat is pretty much never your friend in electronics. Travelling Wave Tubes are used in microwave power electronics, so not all vacuum tubes are dinosaurian...

Re: CHEMI-CON 4700uF AH Alternatives ?

With Chemi-Con, 85C "general purpose crap" is high grade "crap". And the 50V rating is an indicator that it was in something several decades old. All in all, you likely will be able to find a...

Re: Did/do manufacturers sometimes source different caps for the same product?

It's pretty typical for parts to be multiple-sourced if possible. It shields the user from spot shortages from a particular vendor. At one employer it took a Vice President's signature to approve...

Re: Capacitor(s) Identification

I've not seen anything like those black boxes with the colored dots, and I've been interested in electronics since high school, Nixon's first term as President.

I'm going to guess those MOVs R_J...

Re: Capacitor(s) Identification

The yellow discs may be Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs). The markings are unlike what would be typical for ceramic capacitors.

Re: Videoton VT-110, XT clone PSU repair

1. The input electrolytics were made by Roederstein.

2. The date codes on the PWM and supervisor are 1988, "SG" being Silicon General, the creator of those ICs.

3. However, the date code on the...

Re: LPK12-450W safety capacitor shorted

My home town in California's Central Valley got a post office in 1861, and was incorporated in 1871. As a point of reference, California became a state in 1850. There is a section of the town with...

Re: LPK12-450W safety capacitor shorted

The caps you replaced are .01uF, 1KVDC parts, not suited for used as Y Caps. For safety sake I strongly recommend/urge you to use safety agency rated Y caps. Further, I think .01uF Y caps would...

Re: Is this a diode?

Standard recovery 1N540x would probably get toasted if a fast recovery type is necessary.

On the other hand, a UF5402 is much faster than the original part, and might generate extra noise with its...

Re: SMPS mains input voltage question

The 220V cap limits it to 110/120 VAC. When rectified the DC voltage will be in the 160V range. Double the input voltage, double the output voltage. If designed properly, the MOV should also be...

Re: What do these motherboard caps do?

Your MB has DC-DC converters on it to regulate the proper voltage for your processor and memory. Those are probably the output filter capacitors for that DC-DC converters. They need to be ultra-low...

Re: the gutless, bloated, and fried power supply hall of shame

ae7oo, if the TL494 clone PWM is on the secondary side then no feedback optocoupler or feedback transformer is needed. The pulse width modulation is done by the PWM IC, which drives the switch...

Re: WFCO Camper Converter need help understanding KA3846 SMPS Controller

470 pF, 10%, 1 KV. The "K" means 10% tolerance; "M" would have meant 20% and "J" would have meant 5%.

Re: Macintosh polymer recap & ESR considerations

I picked a random value/voltage to compare the various series, not for any other reason. Since I'm not being understood I'll drop out of the conversation rather than cause further confusion.

Re: Macintosh polymer recap & ESR considerations

Looks like my memory was largely incorrect regarding the PM, PJ, and PW series:

PS Series, 2200uF, 6.3V, 12.5x20, .075 ohm impedance, 1250 mA ripple current

PM Series, 2200uF, 6.3V, 10x31.5,...

Re: Macintosh polymer recap & ESR considerations

The power supply in your pictures appears to have bee built in 1988, based on the date code marked on the Fujitsu MB3579, which looks like a PWM similar to (or a clone of) a TL494.

That was right...

Re: Macintosh polymer recap & ESR considerations

Sprague's bits and pieces got bought by multiple companies. Nippon Chemi-Con bought some of Sprague, too.

That said, Sprague 672D series was equivalent to NCC's RX series and, I think, Nichicon's...
