Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

My latitude E6430 is four screws... as is my Asus X83V. Not common but such designs did continue to exist.

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6

Update: DL'd a new W10 image, wrote to a USB stick, saw the array. Go figure.

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6

In this case it's to future proof it for gaming (I.E. Blizzard or the like drops 7 support). In the case of V6 (already on 10) it was because M$ killed the metadata server used by WMP for...

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6

So far it's been a fail thanks to the RAID array not showing up. It seems to see the card (I was able to obtain drivers signed for 10) but not the array as a valid drive. Odd???

The upgrade...

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6

[/QUOTE]

This was from the original V5 thread... sure diff meant RAID 10 (which I ultimatly did use several revisions later)... but regarding Topcat's comment then on Windows 10, we're about to...

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V6

For a variety of reasons, I moved this system to windows 10 tonight.

Good news:

-Activation worked out.
-Most things work out of the box.
-Once I installed classic shell and reconfigured some...

Re: Topcat's Dream Service Bench Reborn!

^Quantum fireball? Yeah, image that shit. And put in a different HDD that isn't as failure prone.

Re: AMD wins!

Maybe not? I wonder if Netburst's HT has the same flaw? What about Nehalem/Westmere EP (both of those have HT as well)? I know you have both still in service (as I do I). Westmere and Nehalem are not...

Re: Computer jobs that are like kicking yourself in nuts.

OTG Hub with mouse and keyboard. Add in a flash drive if you don't feel like messing with the micro SD.

Re: Partitioning based on media transfer rate zones

I'm running a 14 drive 1.75gb RAID 10 with a 4tb weekly backup drive. Not terribly efficient but it fits in my rack, so I'm happy.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Nice. Not bad for $5?

Now you need to build a rig for it... I owe you a part or two for that :D

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Upon further review this isn't it... the crap one had a chicklet keyboard. The plastic stake construction was the failure point.

In that case, keep or flip, I can't advise either way.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Flip the laptop. If that's the Asus platform (core chassis) I think it is (from looking it up), those things go through keyboards like potato chips. My inlaws had one (same age, but more GPU/CPU...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Do know that it's x86 running a full version of x32 windows. Not windows RT or android. Quite powerful for what they are.

Got her running on Windows 8.1 ("with bing" version, like all bay trail...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

As always, we have a minor setback:

Turns out this thing was not reset when it was pawned... and while I can (in a round-a-bout way) get to the factory reset (in windows 10) screen, I cannot get...

Re: Computer jobs that are like kicking yourself in nuts.

I'll work on them if it's family (like the time I Mobo swapped a chromebook for my cousin, which is kinda a tablet?) or if it's something I've bought for cheap. But otherwise, not my thing. I have a...

Re: Computer jobs that are like kicking yourself in nuts.

iMac and apple laptop repairs in general. Consumer laptop motherboard/LCD screen work (lots of screws and flimsy plastic). Supmermicro backplane cables/connectors (ship in a bottle kind of mess). Big...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Last week I scored an FRP'd Samsung Tab E 8.0 for $30 from the Tennessee pawn shop.

Took a couple of days of fiddling with it to finally bypass the FRP lock... and since it's an ATT unit with a...

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6

Ordered a third set of cables... and finally, she works!

Yup, 4 faulty cables. May be the wrong direction... but I literally have no way to test. Not that it matters.

I guess the cheap blue...

Because I intended to (and did) move it to a different case. Originally I had a single-fan cooler that did OK... but then I came across the dual-fan one and swapped it.

Of course!

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V5.6
