In my professional work I don't find them particularly useful for diagnosis, but then most of my computer repair work centres around macbooks.

Unless you mentioned and I missed it, you don't say what soldering iron your using. That is a lot of thermal mass your trying to work with there.

I find that with enough searching most of the schematics and board-view stuff can be found for free, I resent paying for schematics that have most likely been ripped off from somewhere.

Sorry my mistake, when I mean completely deaf there is simply no received rf signal, maybe the PLL is unlocked but there is plenty of static coming the speaker just no received modulated signal...
