Re: Onkyo TX-NR717 No sound.

Re: Fixing Goontrons warped PSU and main rig.

It seems like everyone (at least somewhat well known hardware brands) is slapping there name on a PSU these days, I've several PSUs in the last few years branded by hardware brands not traditionally...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Make sure to check the fan too, I had a similar unit (XS-900 Same chassis, but lower VA and no LCD) several years ago and it had a cheapo sleeve bearing fan that seized up causing the failure of the...

Re: Is this PSU capacitor bad?

^This

The 4-diodes in place of bridge rectifier and thin heat sinks don't exactly give me much confidence in general. Since bulk caps (at least good ones) generally aren't cheap (and if those...

Re: Chinese SLA's: Any good?

^This, there are a few Lithium-Ion UPSs now but they are very-expensive compared to their lead-acid counterparts:

Examples:
$350 for a basic 300W home unit:...

Re: Chinese SLA's: Any good?

There is certainly a risk of poor QA like any Chinese products but I've had decent luck with them.

My UPS came with Yausa's which lasted a little over 2 years, the first set of Chinese off-brand...

Re: Ratdude's 3U Server Shenanigans

There are a few caveats to that. Teapo's are generally ok (but not ideal) in normal ATX PSUs used for the "normal replacement intraval" (generally 3-5 years, though I have seen much older Teapos as...

Re: Dell Optiplex 745 SFF Bad Caps

More than likely the caps went bad on their own, the OptiPlex 745s were at the tail-end of the bad Nichicon HM/HN fiasco so the caps may have been defective to begin with (and Dell also used...

Re: The Cheapest ATX Power Supply on Amazon Prime, How bad can it be?

I'm surprised how well it came out, it wasn't anything fancy, just a Brother PT-2030 label maker and some 12mm white on black tape.

Admittedly it was just a guess since right now the 257W...

Re: The Cheapest ATX Power Supply on Amazon Prime, How bad can it be?

Admittedly the increase in capacitance probably had more effect than the better quality caps (the Changx caps probably wouldn't last but for now only tested 0.02-0.03 ohm higher ESR than the...

Re: The Cheapest ATX Power Supply on Amazon Prime, How bad can it be?

Probably not, I really just got this to "play with" because it was so cheap and wondered how bad or good a $15 PSU could be, and then was curious what better caps would do and had some laying around...

Re: The Cheapest ATX Power Supply on Amazon Prime, How bad can it be?

Looks like it is a single rail PSU that claims to be dual-rail. The 12V schottkys are connected in parallel with traces, and while there are markings on the board for 12V1 and 12V2 where the wires...

Re: The Cheapest ATX Power Supply on Amazon Prime, How bad can it be?

That space is probably for the passive-PFC coil in markets where PFC is required. The board has spots for a passive PFC coil to connect and the case has unused mounting holes for one.

The Cheapest ATX Power Supply on Amazon Prime, How bad can it be?

So I picked up the cheapest ATX PSU I could find on Amazon that was Prime Eligible. It is listed as a KDMPower MIPC 775w and as of 09/30/2018 was selling for the low low price of $15.57 with free 2...

non-water based Chemi-Cons like these will probably last until the seals finally dry-out and shrink (which could be a long time I've got equipment from the 1970s with quality Japanese caps that are...

Re: Desktop Choosing help

The Athlon II x2 250 is much newer (socket AM3, circa 2011) and about 4 times more powerful than the Athlon 64 3200+(since it is a K8U-X board this would be a socket 754 chip, circa 2004 though they...

The only redeeming quality is the fact that it is a PCI (not PCI-Express) card which makes it one of the "Latest" PCI video cards (remember there aren't many "newer" video cards offered in a PCI...
