Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Ok, I'm convinced. I'll use it out in the garage for a crap system....when it dies, it's done.... It's not worth buying a battery or a SSD for.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Yea, it is a Turion.....but so far so good.... If I can donate it and never see it again, I'm good....if it gives someone service for a while, mission accomplished.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I've done a few of them, the success rate is ~75%... I also apply a slightly thicker piece of that heatspreader stuff (not really sure what it's made of, but it feels kind of silicone-ish), which...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Was given a HP DV6500, dual core @ 1.9GHz 4gb RAM 150gb slowass spinner. It had the typical power on then shuts off 3 seconds later. Reflowed the GPU, and now working. Wiped Vista home off it for...

Re: Modern Samxon and Teapo caps much better these days?

Some series of Samxon were known to be problematic (GF was the worst). The GA, GC, and GD Ultra-low ESR caps back in the days were great cost-effective replacements for failed motherboard...

Re: Replacement Chemicon SMG caps

None of those *appear* bad. As far as leakage, if you're referring to the white stuff around the bases of the larger ones, that's not leakage....it's glue.

As a rule, UCC caps are pretty good,...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I got curious and tried it....it took a screen shot of all 3 monitors.... The image size was 7680x1600, saved as PNG @ 3.2mb!!

Same. PSP8 is great for basic things and its portable if...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

That definitely sheds some light on it...and thanks for taking the time to post that. Ironically enough, it was tested in a HP motherboard, which appears to be a rebranded Asus/Pegatron, LGA1366...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

For what it's worth with this weird card, here's the Pro drivers....still showing as a HD7700.....

Yea, I'm aware of the little camera thingy....I'm just old school I guess, and do things the old...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Probably a combination of saving as a JPG and using a VERY old program to capture the screenshot (painshop pro 8). This better? Captured from the same system, but saved as PNG:

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Even AMD's site said "OEM" next to HD8xxx drivers, both mobile and desktop. The card doesn't ring out fake.....but I'll have a closer look tomorrow...and good call with GPUz.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

The weird part is that the hardware ID's are correct for the HD8760 and the card is marked appropriately. This one looks exactly like a HD8760 *should* look. A lot of the fakes or 'gray market'...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

It's not throwing out any errors at all, card works fine....just shows up as the incorrect GPU. Could be a fake. I'll get some good pics of it tomorrow when I get to work, maybe someone can tell......

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I think I found the card in the list...they hyphenated HD8500 - HD8900, in which this card would fall into. Defective or fake, no telling. The card does seem to work. Ohh well....freebies are free...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Possible I suppose......I don't know it's origins....a buddy found it in a junkbox of random shit and thought of me. Card *appears* legit, has all the proper tags/ID's....but no telling.

The...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Was given a ATI HD8760 2gb ddr5 today. Installed driver, card seems to work fine....but card shows as a HD7700.... yay for wonky ATI/AMD drivers....

Re: Dell Dimension 1100? ...or is it? The Ultimate Sleeper System

This build is officially finished....the USB cables were fabbed and the laptop optical power adapter came in. I didn't bother taking any pics of this....it's pretty basic stuff.

FWIW, I actually...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Not bad.

What I do with cards like that is put them in older 'budget boxes' that won't be used for stuff beyond web browsing/office purposes... They'll sure beat the Intel onboard graphics of the...

Re: Using electronics power supply as laptop universal psu

Yup, I do this too. With my scope, my variable volt bench supply output is far cleaner than any brick or even consumer-grade ATX PSU. The server grade ATX's OTOH tend to have very clean...

Re: Dell Dimension 1100? ...or is it? The Ultimate Sleeper System

A couple more touches....

I added the 40mm fan on the northbridge chip. I also replaced the CPU fans with some nicer PWM's to quiet it down....it was rather annoyingly loud before.
