Re: Need help with Shuttle SB83G5A - fans spin but that's all

Blasting them with 350*C or higher probably fixed both the underfill and the substrate, making them connect again. I don't know exactly, but I can tell you that it usually worked first try. One of...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Got a free ASRock ALiveNF5-eSATA2+ w/ a Athlon 64 x2 3600+, some 10/100 NIC that looks like a RTL8139 clone, a TEAC DVD-RW and a Titan TFD-8025H12C fan that I have to solder some wires on.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Thanks, but I own a VCR too :) , a Grundig GV729M. Also have a digital capture card(Winfast PxDVR3200H) but I'm uncertain whether it works with Windows 10

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Got a free PS3, phat model CECHK04, 80GB. Has FW problems that should be easily fixable.

Also got two VHS tapes :)

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Probably keep it around and make a wall of the fallen. (dead stuff)

I already have a bunch of dead stuff that could make it there - a HD5770 (shorted core), the aforementioned WD10EALX, a dead...

Re: Need help with Shuttle SB83G5A - fans spin but that's all

I usually blast stuff right away at 350*C when I reflow (using a automotive heatgun) and have had lots of success (2 PS3s, a Geforce 7600GT 256MB PCI-E, a 9800GT, a 7900GS and the list can continue)...

Re: gigbyte h61m s2pv 2.2

Not always. My H55M-S2V would simply power on for 2 seconds then stop and repeat the cycle.

Later found out two of the VRM fets were kill (there was visible soot on both of them, and also both...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Another free WD, also dead - WD10EALX 1TB.

This one did spin up once, sounding like a angle grinder, ironically did seek once but started clicking when mobo (MSI G41M-P26, nice little DDR3-based...

Re: Need help with Shuttle SB83G5A - fans spin but that's all

The LGA is the only thing to reflow as I understand it. Add some flux, then blast that socket with a heatgun :)

Re: gigbyte h61m s2pv 2.2

Probably shorted MOSFET in the CPU phase.

Place black on gate and test res on both pins for each MOSFET. Ruled out a dud FET on a H55M-S2V.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Drive will spin with another PCB from a WD1600AVJS, so it's not that.

It will click with that one though because of mismatched chipsets (both are Marvell, but one is much older than the 1TB) and...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Nothing is heating up on the PCB.

Using a PCB from a WD1600AVJS will spin the drive up but will click like it's dead because of the different families both drives come from.

At least I know the...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Got a free Western Digital WD1001FALS Black 1TB (Mac) that doesn't spin up - first inspection shows no burnt components other than a chipped capacitor which I might replace.

Also got a 2GB...

Re: AMD wins!

K6-2 was still useable last time I checked.

I think I still have a SS7 machine, although mine has a Pentium MMX 233, 256MB of RAM and a 4.3GB HDD.
Didn't use the onboard USB either, as I opted...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Recapped the Winfast K8M890M2MA-RS2H board today. Replaced the Samyoung NXC 3300uF 6.3v caps it had with Rubycon MBZ pulls. VRM section is cold, board POSTs fine as opposed to when it had the...

Re: Post your system.......

Since I have another i3 in my hands, I figured I could make a build:

CPU: Intel Core i3 540 3.07GHz
MB: Gigabye GA-H55M-S2V
PSU: Frontier DR-8460BTX 450W
HDD: Samsung HD322HJ 320GB + Samsung...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

They're the only NXC on that board. Rest is OST RLX for the 1000uF and Rubycon amBZ for the VRM high.

Re: Thermaltake 450 lite with burnt/exploded 5vsb ic

The two Thermaltake PSUs I have are both CWT ISO platform (which I'm not even sure of how much it can do) and while one of them has TEAPO caps (which AFAIK are decent), the other is filled with...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Scored a Winfast K8M890M2MA-RS2H mobo w/ Sempron 3000+ AM2 and about 768MB of RAM (1x256 and 1x512 DDR2 sticks).

Posts fine, but the VRM low caps are probably kaput (Samyoung NXC - aren't these...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Been looking for parts for a i3 build.

So far, I did some replacements to the i3 540 combo - I replaced the MOSFETs with P70N02LDG (original burnt ones were NTD4906).

While at it, I've found...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Oh. That's just ye olde colophonium, the kind used to grease violins. I don't have liquid flux.
I did already clean that.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

That loose bit of solder on the top of the photo is because there's nothing under the MOSFET gate tab to solder on. I had to solder both gate tabs together with lots of solder, THEN solder to...
