Re: Some serious security bug in INTEL CPUs?? Since Westmere possibly

Looks like Wolfdale will never get any updates. Intel updated their guidance April 2. Sounds like a bunch of BS to me for the reasons.

Re: Manjaro Linux

Yep, it mirrors what I found.

I also tried Linux Mint, but since Mint runs on top of Ubuntu and Ubuntu runs on top of Debian, I figured I didn't need the extra overhead.

I would run Debian LXDE...

Re: Manjaro Linux

It helps if you have a separate physical PC just for testing. On my local kijiji, I can find dual cores (core2duo) in the $10 to $20 range.

Re: Manjaro Linux

I tried Manjaro LXDE 3 times in the past. It would work well for a few weeks and then some upgrade would eventually leave it in a non booting state. This happened 3 times and after the 3rd time, I...

Re: Linux Distros : Mint, Zorin and Ubuntu - my 2 cents

Back in 2014, I tried a lot of distros to replace the end of support XP. Since all my computers are discarded by others as too old, I tried to pick a lightweight linux distro.

So I tried a lot of...

Re: Linux Distros : Mint, Zorin and Ubuntu - my 2 cents

I'm not a GNOME user. Too much DRAM just to launch a couple of icons. I prefer LXDE and probably LXQT, if it ever gets released, and/or XFCE.

Re: Linux Distros : Mint, Zorin and Ubuntu - my 2 cents

Version 18.04, in beta, is supposed to revert back to GNOME desktop. So check out 18.04, not 16.04.04.

Re: Soldering station for around $150......thoughts anyone?

I have the Hakko FX888 (analog). I use it sparingly since I rarely do repairs now, but with a chisel tip (1.8, 2.4 or 3.2mm), it can desolder easily.

Re: Saw this on Craigslist, can't make this stuff up.

I can't help but notice that the local Bestbuy in the USA sells 40inch LED TVs brand new with warranty for $199 USD.

The seller needs a reality check.

Re: Saw this on Craigslist, can't make this stuff up.

You get all sorts. Some people don't understand that most electronics and computers don't hold their value even over 2 years.

Some people also aren't very good shoppers. For example, they pay...

Re: Some serious security bug in INTEL CPUs?? Since Westmere possibly

Re: Bad cap reading 4x high?

Electrolytic caps are usually +/- 20% of their uF rating. So a 1000uF cap reading 1048uF is okay.

The ESR might be a bit high depending on which exact 1000uF cap you have. Check it against

Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

I'll take my 50 inch plasma anyday over my old vintage Sony 32 inch CRT.

I dread the day the plasma dies and I can't fix it. I already pre-ordered the mostly like components to die in my plasma.

You will find the above to be similar for any Fortune 500 company. Especially in a long in the tooth bull market.
