Re: Ticking PSU

Great to hear you got it running again. :)

Yes, with self-oscillating discontinuous flyback designs, you won't see a "set" frequency nor any particular waveforms (especially sinewaves). They kind...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

My latest decent scores:
50 (fifty) Core 2 Duo CPUs for a $1 (with $9 S&H)
11 keyboards for $1 (with $11 S&H)
Looks like buying in bulk yields overall cheaper price than buying individual...

Re: Ticking PSU

If I am not mistaken, that part number suggests a 25V Zener diode... which more or less makes sense. In this particular case, the 2SK3567 MOSFET has a absolute maximum Gate-Source voltage rating of...

Re: XFX GeForce 9600 GSO [PV-T960-SDFH V1.4] recap info

Ha, good catch! :D
It's only one, though, and it's backed up by two PSA polymers. So even if it fails, the card will continue to work.

Yeah, it makes no sense, really. They could have gone with...

Re: Power Adapter Sony VGP-19V10 Not Working - Help Please

Good job with the repair! :)
And thanks for providing some voltage measurements - those could come pretty handy if someone needs to troubleshoot one of these.

Looks like the power adapter must...

Re: Ticking PSU

Your diagram appears correct for a 2-transistor circuit, more or less.

Z103 is likely used as protection on the Gate of the 2SK3567 MOSFET.

Did you check C107 out of circuit, by the way? It is...

Re: Power Adapter Sony VGP-19V10 Not Working - Help Please

Close, but it functions a bit differently.

You should have 160V on the primary cap and on one of the transformer pins. From what I traced, that transformer pin should be the one next to the "R12"...

Re: Ticking PSU

Faint ticking without any load is normal for some discontinuous flyback power adapters, but not all of them, and certainly not with a load. So most likely that failed primary cap was the issue. Other...

Re: XFX GeForce 9600 GSO [PV-T960-SDFH V1.4] recap info

Nope, I have not. ;) In fact, I still keep that bag. Actually, I have those Teapos divided in two bags: one with the "good ones" and the other with the questionable ones (because many of them...

Arrow XFX GeForce 9600 GSO [PV-T960-SDFH V1.4] recap info

Here is another eBay XFX $9 special video card ;) with more blown Sacon FZ capacitors. This time, a GeForce 9600 GSO model PV-T960-SDFH V1.4, based on the G92 GPU core (96 shaders, 192-bit 768 MB of...

Re: Monitor Audio RSW-12 - crackle and popping sound

That's a good clue there.

Heat usually affects two things the most: solder joints and electrolytic capacitors. When electrolytic capacitors are made warmer, their ESR spec improves. So it's...

Re: DPS-160QB "Slimeline" Power Supply

Just because the capacitors don't look swollen/bad doesn't mean that they aren't. I've seen electrolytic caps fail many times now with no visual signs. This is especially common for the small ones (5...

Re: Soldering station thoughts and guidelines

Well, yes and no. :)

When it comes to cheap irons, indeed everyone will likely have a preference to a different iron, depending on their working style.

But when it comes to high-end gear, it's...

Re: A "nice" YoungYear unit?

I concur.
That system probably won't peak more than 200W DC load. So it should be okay, indeed.

That said, since the 12V rail did go as high as 12.6V with a load, I'd say keep a good watch on the...

Re: Tyco spi270f4b24 ATX supply repair tips (not starting)

Ironically, in one of the repair shops where I worked a while back, I had a PSU very similar to this to fix. I don't remember if it was made by SPI/Forton specifically, but it was for a POS/cash...

Re: A "nice" YoungYear unit?

+10

Not uncommon for 45V rectifiers to blow on the 12V rail, unless the 12V rail transformer windings are center-tapped to the 5V rectified output (done on some newer H-bridge PSU designs to...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Yes, when it comes to re-selling, indeed anything less than a quad-core is not worthwhile these days.

But if you like playing with PC gear and assuming you've not filled your house to the brim...

Re: Soldering station thoughts and guidelines

You should give that T12 flat tip another try. I swear by my T12-D52 tip (5.2 mm bevel type). 330-350C is enough for almost every lead-free project I tackle. It does take a bit of time to get used to...

Re: can these retro video cards be polymodded safely?

Yup, looks like they are getting over 20% high on capacitance (i.e. above their +/-20% specs.) What's worse is they probably won't bulge or show any signs of failure. At least when I see United...

Re: Fixing Goontrons warped PSU and main rig.

Well, it looks to me as though re-branding has been going on for a much longer time than that. Take for example, Antec - they've used CWT and Delta to make their PSUs, among others. Same goes for...

Re: Enermax PRO 82+ 525W repair

Well, if the power supply is to completely short-circuit on the primary side, it would be as Drack pointed out: 3.75 Amps.

However, with the PSU running, you won't get anywhere near that current,...

Re: LG studioworks 700m (Crt)

Yes, it's a 17" CRT, so the colors and contrast will indeed be excellent. I find the same often goes for 19" CRTs too. But once you go to 21", colors can get be little bland on some of them.

Re: Any way to improve distance of toy remote control car?

Wow, I've never seen an antenna like that in a cheap RC before, and I used to have (and play) with quite a few when I was a little younger. Most of my *toy* RCs are from the late 90's / early 2000's,...

Probably more bad solder joints. Try resoldering every big component on the main board and CRT neck board.
