Re: HSU Research VTF-2 MK1 subwoofer amplifier repair

Awesome, great to hear you got it going! :)

From my limited experience with amps, it seems that a lot of late 90's and 2000's stuff has cheap caps that just go bad after 5-10 years in service. So...

Re: Harmon Kardon HK206 PC speakers

Most likely a bad solder joint in the speaker with the volume pot. Open it up and check. Better yet, post some high-res pictures of the board here, if possible. Then we may be able to see if that is...

Re: Cambridge Audio volume control problem

Congrats on the repair and thanks for taking the time to post it here!

Every time I see an amplifier with a microcontroller of some sort, I just cringe (especially early-mid 90's "home...

Re: Behringer Eurolive B812NEO cutting in and out repair

I'm not 100% sure, but if I had to guess, they probably did this to get a higher "cold" resistance - i.e. less inrush current at cold startup.

Now the real question is: does the circuit really...

Re: > Possible to repair/replace SMD capacitor in VGA?

+1

If you had the video card working in your computer and you never touched it before it went bad, chances are indeed it's the GPU chip that has failed and most likely that cap was gone/missing...

Post Re: Lite-ON PS-6311-2d2 [Dell L305N-00]

Another plain PSU post. This one is a Dell L305-00 305 Watt PSU. OEM is Lite-ON, model PS-6311-2d2. Itís for Dellís older BTX-style PCs like the venerable OptiPlex 755, Dimension E510/520 and etc....

Re: can these retro video cards be polymodded safely?

YESSIR, it does!

I like those purple Sanyo SEPC caps quite a bit myself - especially on green-colored boards. Besides the good looks, they are some tough workers too.

Re: The Hall of Shame - Badcaps Photo Montage

As usual.

And this is nothing. I have a Dell Dimension E5150 motherboard littered with KZG caps of a few different sizes. But not like that matters - they are all bad/bulged. What's even more...

Re: Two graphic cards not detected by BIOS

Well, fan issue aside, since both cards are still not getting detected... likely they just need a reflow/reheating. If you have nothing better to do with these cards and you don't mind giving this a...

Re: How to Recondition (Reform) Electrolytic Capacitors and Why

The series incandescent bulb trick is well-known among restoration techs as an alternative to a variac (and in some cases, even better than a variac, since the bulb limits current too).

Re: Yamaha YST-MS25 amp board recap: replace small electrolytics with different type?

Well, if you already did, that's fine. Just keep the old ones as spares in case you run into another amplifier (or other device) that needs a recap. In a pinch, they will do.

Oh yes, that was a...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

All modern (and even not so modern) ATI and nVidia GPUs are affected - but some more than others, of course (GeForce 6k-8k series series were the worst, along with X1k and HD6k and newer from ATI)....

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2

Yes, 100%.
I know it's an old *AT* PSU that probably would never see such high loads on its rails... but it's still a turd. If they at least mounted the primary and secondary-side silicon onto some...

Re: How to Recondition (Reform) Electrolytic Capacitors and Why

Yes, sort of.

No.
Lower Wattage = slower turn on and greater protection
Higher Wattage = faster turn on, less protection, but allows device to use more power.

With that said, you can't go...

Did this happen right away after changing the caps or over some period of time.
If it happened right away, it is possible you placed the new caps backwards. Remember, electrolytic caps are...

Re: Yamaha YST-MS25 amp board recap: replace small electrolytics with different type?

Not surprised. Those older solvent-based electrolytic caps last a very long time. I rarely replace them unless they have been exposed to excessive heat for a long time. (Think: darkened/burned PCB...

Re: EGVA p/n: 141-BL-E757-TR

You should trace what circuit/chip it goes to so we can figure it out.

There are many types of SOT-23 diode configurations available - i.e. which pin is Anode/Cathode and whether there are 1 or 2...

Re: EVGA G3 series - fan needed.

If this is not for a customer (or if the customer won't mind), why not just get a 120 mm fan and zip tie it? (Or if you are more handy, put some new screw holes on the case.)
