Re: The 2019 Operating System Thread

Hope this isn't inappropriate, but despite having a copy of 10, I haven't wanted to make the jump because of all this feedback about how bad it is, and 7 works, just fine for me. However, I'm...

Re: Cambridge Soundworks Basscube 12S

Your suggestions for inspection and cleanup is what I'm gonna do. Someone cut the power cord off the unit so I can't power it up, yet. The way this unit was designed, the plate amp detaches from...

Cambridge Soundworks Basscube 12S

So I have a Basscube 12S with the usual problems--burned up around some power resistors, capacitors and diodes. I've seen several examples of this online. I don't recall anyone actually, coming up...

Re: Looking for advice on an Ultra 550 high voltage and other mods

A cousin of mine recently, gave my parents a system containing one of these supplies. I can't get past how the inductors are pressed right up against the heatsinks, and the caps raised up off the...

Re: Seagate External HDD Enclosure ST300003U2

Because I just love the way this Seagate enclosure looks--it's like a tank compared to the anodized paperweights I see, nowadays. And I could always refinish it to look more modern. I don't mind...

Re: Seagate External HDD Enclosure ST300003U2

Well, a 500GB would be fine. I see the Caviar Blue's on Amazon for not too much. Any suggestion for drives with greater longevity? Performance is not the goal, here just lifetime.

Question Seagate External HDD Enclosure ST300003U2

I have this older Seagate external HDD enclosure with a 160GB drive inside that is one its way out so I'd like to replace it, but I'm curious, are there limitations to what I can replace it with? ...

Re: TV Resolution vs. PC resolution.

This didn't really help me. Let's just cover the first part. Which is the native resolution? The 1360 X 768 or the 720p? I thought LCD's had a specific, native resolution where they take proper...

TV Resolution vs. PC resolution.

Just curious which resolution I should be working with on a TV for best picture. I have a 720P TV, but it has a different resolution altogether if I use the VGA port. Which one is the actual native...

Re: can these retro video cards be polymodded safely?

I don't see how. In a system that old, just worry about reinforcing the power supply and motherboard with fresh, young capacitors. Even if it had Rubycon's, they would be ancient.

Re: Creative Sound Blaster 16s with incorrectly capped TEA2025 amplifiers

Just real quick, because I'm out eating pho, I think you interpreted what the data sheet wrong. It doesn't say that NP caps should be used only on the inputs, it says that the capacitors used on the...

Re: How many uf do i need to cope with the HDD inrush current

I don't see how this is a surprise. If we looked at this simply from a capacitors ability to quickly, supply power to the drive, putting a cap, right at the drives power connector is not going to...

Re: can these retro video cards be polymodded safely?

I don't think this is a good idea unless, your power supply is using great quality electrolytics, and your motherboard has already been polymodded. Seems to me you would stress basic electrolytics...

Behringer Truth B3031A wont power up

My cousin sent one of his studio monitors to me in hopes I can fix it. Apparently, PG&E was doing a rolling blackout in his area, he forgot, and one of the two monitors developed this problem.

Re: My Yamaha C-65 pre-amplifier blew up!

I assume that it must have something to do with the power supply stage as well because the unit powered down, and will not power back up.

Re: How do I get rid of the burning smell?

This was what caused the smell, which seems to have subsided from the house, today. Although, I had a wooden crate sitting on top of the unit (there's no vents so it doesn't matter) and it seems to...

Re: My Yamaha C-65 pre-amplifier blew up!

Those two transistors are completely cracked in half. But what would have caused this? Just age? I don't want to replace the components, and rework the traces to have them blow, again.

Unhappy My Yamaha C-65 pre-amplifier blew up!

Well, I got my pre down to the shop, and opened her up. Wow, does this thing smell bad! It has two obvious issues: the burned up portion of the PCB, which now appears cracked and one if not both of...

Unhappy How do I get rid of the burning smell?

So my pre-amplifier took a dump, tonight. No apparent reason other than age, I suspect. It's a Yamaha C-65 preamp. I suspect the transformer itself may have taken a dump--I'll open it up, tomorrow...

Re: Weekend score: Altec Lansing VS4121 Speakers for $7.59!

I remember picking up a mid-size Altec 2.1 system for $15 because, as the note on it read, "shuts off intermittently". Okay, a cap problem, maybe? So I bought them, and first thing I noticed was...

Re: Vizio E241i-A1 woes.

Well, it still behaves the same after a recap. Time to bust out my meter, and test stuff out. I'll start with the previous suggestion, checking the voltage at the primary cap during turn-on.

Any...
